Team Reptile announced HYPERFUNK, a follow-up to their 2023 Bomb Rush Cyberfunk. The Lethal League developer stated that the game is “2 seconds per second of evolved funkstyle.” Bomb Rush Cyberfunk was a highly-anticipated spiritual sequel to Sega’s Jet Set Radio Future, released in 2002 for the Xbox.
On Steam, BRC currently has overwhelmingly positive reviews. One of the game’s downsides, through no fault of its own, was that it was released too late to be considered for any awards at The Game Awards. Many people considered BRC to be their personal game of the year for 2023.
HYPERFUNK does not have an expected release date yet, but here is some information about the story. According to Team Reptile, “HYPERFUNK is an extreme trick and graffiti game from a bright future. Society is shaped by the effects of the Hyper, the online space, as various graffiti crews compete in reality with style and ideology of how to interpret this new world. Use your skates, skateboard or BMX to do tricks that fuel your personal boostpack. The higher your combo score, the faster you can boost, up to ridiculous speeds.”
The game is expected to come out on PC via Steam. Be on the lookout for news of it coming out on Switch 2, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. I expect that the game will have Steam Deck compatibility, just like its predecessor.
I think HYPERFUNK’s gameplay and soundtrack will be outstanding, judging from the first game. I feel that the story of how advances in the Internet shape identity and culture resonates with a lot of people. It has vibes of .hack and Serial Experiments Lain.
In my opinion, people already have high hopes for this game, and I hope Team Reptile follows community feedback regarding the first game. Hopefully, fortune favors this game regarding a nomination in The Game Awards.
