Hideo Kojima Proves Even a Silent Hill Isn’t Too Steep to Climb with New Game OD

If there’s one thing that Hideo Kojima wants to be known for, it’s that he doesn’t forget the past. He left Konami under terrible circumstances over a decade ago, stemming from the shocking cancellation of Silent Hills. Ultimately, this exit occurred during the post-launch period of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. These two projects being brutally cut short gave fans a powerful reason to rally behind the developer and support his creative vision. How could anyone forget such a public and disappointing end to these ambitious games?

From Silent Hill to Screaming Thrills

Despite Metal Gear Solid V standing as one of the most mechanically impressive stealth games ever made, it’s considered to be an unfinished story. As Konami forced development to conclude, the narrative felt incomplete and missing its intended final act; therefore, the creative team was unable to give it a proper ending. For many players, not being able to experience this ending feels like a genuine loss since they’ll never see that story reach its planned finale. Given this unfinished state, is it any wonder that the game’s impressive mechanics feel somewhat hollow in the end?

Kojima Productions now channels that creative energy into new projects, which feels like a satisfying form of artistic rebellion. Furthermore, Silent Hills had assembled a dream team before its cancellation, with Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro set to direct. Alongside these directors, many veterans from the original survival horror series are also coming back, making the project a promising, phenomenal return to form for the legendary franchise.

If there’s any cancelled project that stings more than one that had such a perfect creative alignment, it seems unlikely. Unfortunately, Konami shut the entire operation down before it could truly come to life. P.T., a playable teaser that dropped without warning in August 2014, became the public’s first taste of this potential. With this free, enigmatic demo, the entire gaming world could experience this new take on horror. This teaser was unknown to everyone at first, but that only added to its thrilling mystery and drew in millions of curious eyes.

In P.T., players are trapped in a claustrophobic first-person perspective within a looping, ever-shifting hallway, revealing its meticulously designed and terrifying atmosphere. Even doing simple tasks like examining messy countertops to trying to use a phone while eerie noises echo in the background will keep players on edge. The environment was deeply unsettling from the start, coming alive with doors slamming on their own and a blood-drenched fridge swinging from the ceiling. Gradually, players will undergo an experience that quickly escalates from unsettling to outright terrifying, especially with the discovery of a certain fetus in a sink.

Konami’s Greatest Horror Was Corporate

After players solve a convoluted puzzle involving specific phrases and precise steps, the demo rewards them with the Silent Hills reveal trailer. In the video, Kojima, del Toro, and leading man Norman Reedus were shown, which became an unforgettable moment for horror fans. Yet, Konami’s cancellation of the game and Kojima’s departure left fans feeling like a future classic had been strangled in its crib. With the announcement of OD, however, history may be repeating itself.

Acclaimed horror director Jordan Peele will work in collaboration with Kojima Productions to develop OD, which features actors like Hunter Schafer and Sophia Lillis. Looking at the game, it’s clear it drew inspiration from the lost promise of Silent Hills. Without any corporate overlords standing in the way, Kojima can finally make the survival horror game that he’s always wanted.
