It’s cold. But we have not lost hope. Frostpunk 1886 returns from the wastelands, and our larder must be stocked; we must brace for the storm in 2027. The developers of the beloved RTS, 11 Bit Studios, have announced their plans on remastering the original Frostpunk, the RTS that has warmed all our hearts. Frostpunk requires you to manage your resources strategically; to build haphazardly means death to your citizens and your tenure as Captain. To hear that, in just a few short years, Frostpunk 1886 will burst into the scene like a steam-train through the snow is chilling, for all the best reasons.
In a recent press release, 11 Bit Studios has informed us that Frostpunk 1886 will remain faithful to the original yet come with its own host of improvements. “The development of Frostpunk 2 made us realize how much the experience of the original could be improved using the Unreal Engine,” they say. Only time will tell whether the remaster will breathe new warmth into the series or leave it cold on the ground. The Steam page for Frostpunk 1886 is sparse on the exact details, but one thing that stands out besides the release date is mod support, bringing a fantastic community out of the cold to share their warmth with each other.
Although the graphics still hold their own charm today, running it on the proposed Unreal Engine could bring a host of graphical improvements, new animations, and likely an expanded tech tree to really drive in the sheer scarcity of resources and choice paralysis. A new Path will give us more options, and more anxiety as we rush to keep our people alive through the cold.
The original Frostpunk was a masterpiece, forcing you to choose whether or not you’ll bring hope to your charges or prioritize their lives over comfort. You had a limited time to build up a wealth of scarce resources, and to make sure your settlement had the ability to insulate itself from the oncoming storm, and most importantly, had the will to hold on. Frostpunk 1886 will come. Our fridges need to be stocked. I have Faith. The coal in my furnace burns as strongly as the passion in my heart. Will you join hands with me as we brace for the cold?
