Tarsier Studios, the masterminds behind the beautifully creepy Little Nightmares, have just pulled back the curtain on their new project, REANIMAL, and it’s already looking like another absolute banger in the horror department. As part of Steam Next Fest, they’ve dropped a demo, giving all of us a delightfully dreadful sneak peek into this new cooperative nightmare. So, grab your emotional support buddy and maybe a teddy bear, because Tarsier is about to take us on another wild, unsettling ride.
The demo, which you can grab on Steam right now, doesn’t waste any time. It drops you right at the beginning of the game, letting you explore two wonderfully grim environments: the Mill and the Trainyard. Both are dripping with that signature Tarsier style—grimy, oppressive, and industrial, but twisted into something far more sinister. The early moments alone carry the weight of the dark mystery you’ve fallen into.
From the trailer and the gameplay I’ve seen, the core mechanics feel like a smart evolution of what made Little Nightmares so great. You’ll be solving environmental puzzles that make you feel clever, sneaking past grotesque creatures that make your skin crawl, and, of course, running for your dear life when things go belly up. A fantastic new addition is a boat for exploration, which promises to open up this twisted world in a new way. I’m already picturing a heart-pounding sequence of trying to paddle away from some unspeakable horror lurking just beneath the water’s surface.
You’re a tiny kid in a world that’s way too big and way too hostile. Now, add a friend to the mix. That’s the heart of REANIMAL. Published by THQ Nordic, this game puts you and a partner in the tiny, probably very dirty, shoes of a brother and sister. Your mission? To find your missing friends on a hellish island that looks like it was designed by a committee of your worst childhood fears.
One of the coolest things here is that the game is fully playable in both single-player and co-op (local and online). But here’s the kicker: Tarsier has designed a shared, single camera for co-op. No split-screen here, folks. You and your buddy are stuck seeing the exact same terrifying view. It’s a genius move to ramp up the claustrophobia and force you to communicate. If one of you gets spooked and runs, you’re both getting dragged into the chaos. I love it.
What always set Tarsier’s games apart for me was their ability to weave a sliver of hope into pure, unadulterated terror. REANIMAL seems to be carrying that torch beautifully. The story focuses on two orphans looking for redemption in a world that’s given them every reason to give up. This “horror with hope” approach adds an emotional depth that you don’t often find in the genre. It’s not just about the jump scares; it’s about connecting with these kids and their desperate struggle.
And let’s talk about the monster design. Tarsier is known for creating creatures that will haunt your dreams for weeks, and REANIMAL is no exception. The developers even mentioned that the monsters are inspired by fragments of the children’s own troubled pasts. So, the things hunting you aren’t just random beasts; they’re living, breathing manifestations of trauma. It’s a deeply psychological and frankly brilliant way to do horror. Creepy as hell, but brilliant.
The dark and morbid world of REANIMAL will show you the most beautifully horrid things you would wish for from Tarsier. The full version is set to release in the first quarter of 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and the Nintendo Switch 2. Yeah, it’s a bit of a wait, but if this demo is any indication, it’ll be more than worth it. So, if you’re a fan of Tarsier Studios’ works, co-op horror, atmospheric storytelling, or just enjoy being thoroughly creeped out, check out the REANIMAL demo on Steam.
