Omocat is an indie developer based in Los Angeles and is the developer of the popular hit game Omori. They are renowned for their distinctive and visually stunning art style, as well as their engaging storytelling. This week, I want to shine a spotlight on Omocat, from its inception to its current accomplishments, and discuss what’s next for them.

The Dark World of Omori and Why It’s Such a Success

If you didn’t know, Omocat is the developer of the hit game Omori. It’s a role-playing game that was released in 2020 and became a viral sensation. It discussed themes of depression, suicide, mental health, and coping through these difficulties. I played the game myself, and I can definitely admit, I had never cried during a game as hard as I cried in this one, even through Kingdom Hearts. Omori plays on these themes and keeps players on their toes because of how fast the game switches between a light-hearted, cute tone and the unbelievable trauma of the main character.

The balance between these two things throughout the game is exceptional. Players are put on a literal roller coaster of emotions and are distracted by the wholesome relationship between the main characters and the comical side characters and villains we come across throughout our journey. After experiencing the game, I can definitely say I can relate to the main characters a lot, which I fully believe contributed to the immense success of the game. It was so relatable, funny, sad, engaging, and is definitely something worth experiencing for yourself.

What is Omocat Doing Now?

Omocat is still active as a brand, releasing merchandise, and celebrated its 10th anniversary last year. Since the release of Omori, Omocat has attended many conventions like Anime NYC and EVO to showcase their merchandise for fans. Omocat has also dabbled in live streaming on Twitch to connect with fans more and has even collaborated with other YouTubers and streamers to push content and merchandise. Though nothing has been announced yet, Omocat is also working on future projects, and as a fan of Omori and Omocat, I cannot wait to see what they have in store for fans.
