September 12th’s Nintendo Direct was packed full of awesome surprises for Mario’s 40th anniversary, but perhaps the biggest and most exciting announcement was the title of The Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel. We already knew a sequel was coming, but when Universal registered the domain for Super Mario Galaxy, we wondered. Hmm, could the Mario sequel be based on those beloved Wii games?
It turns out that we were right.
The movie’s first teaser debuted in the Nintendo Direct, along with a lot of other announcements for Mario’s 40th anniversary. It’s a beautiful day in the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario is sleeping under a tree when a butterfly lands on his head. The butterfly takes off and flies over the Mushroom Kingdom, up towards Peach’s castle, then up, up, up towards the sky, where the title is revealed. A Luma flies out from behind the title and exclaims, “Let’s-a-go!”
The movie will be coming to theaters in April of 2026. The Direct also included a brief interview with the movie’s co-producer, Chris Meledandri. He said that “while the Super Mario Galaxy games are the core inspiration for our story, this next film hold surprises for every Mario era.” The voices from the original movie will return, including Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek.
Noticeably missing is Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong. However, Universal has also secured the domain for a Donkey Kong movie, so we probably haven’t heard the last of Rogan’s Donkey Kong, even if he doesn’t go into space with the others.
I adored the previous movie, and Super Mario Galaxy is one of my favorite Mario games, so naturally, I’m super excited. I’m hoping that Rosalina will be in the movie, since she’s one of my favorite Mario characters and it would seem empty to have a Galaxy movie without the mother of all the Lumas. In addition, I’m hoping to see a return of the Luma from the original movie who had a death wish, since he was hilarious. In any case, I’m looking forward to seeing this movie in theaters, and I’m sure many other Nintendo fans are as well.
