Both LEGO and Mario have an incredible legacy of success in the pop culture genre, and have teamed up in the past to make some incredible collaboration sets. Namely, the Super Mario collection was a fantastic hit, and several recent Mario Kart collaborations have been released as well. Now, it appears another collaboration of the gaming giants is in store, as a leak of an upcoming Spiny Blue Shell set is making its way around internet forums, along with a picture of the possible design.

Nintendo Switch 2 has taken over the gaming world, with a release set in just under a month. One of the biggest highlights of the launch is the upcoming Mario Kart World, which is already said to be driving the preorder sales of the console. Given the timing of the upcoming launch, it appears LEGO may be trying to capitalize on the popularity, while Mario Kart uses the brick set as a marketing tool. The pairing makes sense, and if rumors are to be believed, the leaked Spiny Blue Shell would be a perfect representation of the collaboration.

The original leak came from Brick Built Blogs on X, which posted an alleged image of the set as well.

The image itself is pretty low quality, which could indicate that it is fake. It could also simply indicate the fact it is a leak, it is not meant for marketing purposes. That said, LEGO has already established that they are partnering with Nintendo for multiple projects this year. As GameRant outlines:

Earlier this year LEGO announced a massive Mario Kart set based on Mario himself. This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to new LEGO Mario Kart sets being released in 2025. Earlier this month, a new wave of Nintendo-based LEGO kits was announced, including three modeled after characters, vehicles, and locations from Mario Kart. Starting on August 1, fans will be able to add Mario’s standard red go-kart, Wario’s purple hot rod, and King Boo’s Teddy Buggy to their buildable garages, as well as race through Bowser’s lava-filled castle.

According to the leaker, though, the LEGO Spiny Shell would not be available on its own. Instead, fans could package the special product for buying another set, for passing the minimum purchase price, or by utilizing the LEGO Insiders Reward program. This means fans will have to spend a bit if they want what appears to be a rarer collectible. The leak claims the set will become available in May 2025, which would align with the timeframe of the Switch 2 release and Mario Kart World as well. Take the leak with a grain of salt, but if it is real, an announcement should be forthcoming.

Final Thoughts

Mario Kart World is expected to be a massive success for the upcoming Switch 2. The spiny blue shell is one of the most iconic power-up items the franchise has ever released. It brings fans both joy and heartbreak, and turns any race into a chaotic romp. That it has not received a collaboration sooner is shocking, so the rumor makes a lot of sense. The item is returning to the power-up lineup in World, so the pairing with a brick set would be a perfect marketing tool.

Of course, no rumor can be relied upon until an actual announcement is made. Hopefully, one of the two entities will clue fans in soon. Until then, all we have is a dream and a blurry picture of a LEGO set.
