Mario Kart World has plenty of secrets hidden within it. As you go racing in Free Roam Mode, you can go looking for easter eggs. However, there’s a classic easter egg that is hidden on the character select screen, and you don’t even need to do anything convoluted to find it.
Totaka’s Song has been a running easter egg in many Nintendo games, and now it’s found its way into the newest Nintendo generation. According to IGN, you just need to go to Mario Kart World‘s character selection screen, “scroll over to Yoshi on your character roster and leave the green dinosaur dancing for a little while. Eventually, he will start humming a familiar tune — yes, this is Yoshi singing Totaka’s Song.”
Totaka’s Song was written by Nintendo sound designer Kazumi Totaka. It first appeared in the Japan-exclusive Game Boy game X, and it has been used as an easter egg in several other games since then, such as Mario Paint, Luigi’s Mansion, and Yoshi’s New Island. It is fitting for Mario Kart World to continue the tradition. It is especially fitting for Yoshi to be the one singing Totaka’s Song, since in addition to being a sound designer, Totaka is also the voice of Yoshi. As such, Totaka gets to sing his own song and carry on a tradition at the same time.
Totaka’s Song will likely appear in many future Nintendo titles, but it’s neat that the Switch 2 brought the song back as soon as it launched. It’s also likely that many players discovered the easter egg by accident without even knowing the song’s significance. Even if you don’t know the history of Totaka’s Song, you can still hear Yoshi hum a song in his cute voice. Face it, that’s a secret worth discovering in its own right.
