Megaquarium is a very fun business sim where you get to run your own aquarium. Like in many business sims, Megaquarium strikes a balance between the thrill of getting to build your own aquarium and the stress of having to manage money and other elements. A new DLC pack is coming on the 25th, but in addition, fans will be getting a free update to the game.

About Megaquarium

Megaquarium is developed by Twice Circled, and it takes some obvious inspiration from Roller Coaster Tycoon and other classic business sims. You build tanks, buy fish, and try to keep the fish alive so your aquarium can draw in customers. You can also decorate your aquarium, unlock upgrades, and work towards building a dream home for your fish. Of course, you’ll have to build slowly, or else you’ll go bankrupt.

The game is addictive, but it can also be difficult. Different fish have different requirements to keep them alive. Some fish need warm tanks; others need cold tanks. Some fish have special nutrient requirements. Of course, if you put a predator in the same tank as its prey, the predator will eat the prey. This means that you might have to juggle several tasks at once, but that makes the experience rewarding.

The UI for the game is also very complex, given that you have many different things to take care of at once. You’ll be spending a lot of time wading through menus, and you might have to constantly remind yourself of what each button does. Could the update possibly improve the convoluted menus? Let’s find out.

About the Megaquarium Free Update

The Steam page for the game shared a news post that discussed the free update. One way the update will improve the UI will be with message filters. You will be able to sort messages out by type instead of having to scroll through all your messages to find the right one. In addition, the build menu will remember your view perspective, so you don’t have to re-adjust the view to pick up where you left off. There will also be a new icon that shows you whether or not a tank can handle all its fish after the fish grow up. Finally, you will be able to search for which fish are dangerous to which other fish.

You will also be able to prioritize the staff members’ tasks. For example, if you want one staff member to focus on feeding the fish, you can prioritize feeding with that employee. The update will also change calcium into “a hard requirement for animals who need it.” In addition, you’ll be able to install lights in any tank, the backpack accessory will work for other items besides food refills, and there will be new achievements.

The update will also add improvements to the base game campaign. According to the update, the campaign will involve “less re-researching of animals and equipment unlocked in previous levels, more varied animal availability and less re-use of animals in the side objectives,” and “some research costs and prestige requirements have been tweaked for better pacing.”

When Does the Update Come Out?

The Megaquarium free update comes out on February 25th. If you don’t already own it, now is a perfect time to purchase it from Steam for $24.99. If you enjoy business sim games like Roller Coaster Tycoon and Two-Point Hospital, then you should enjoy Megaquarium. If you own the game and you haven’t played it for a while, the update might give you some motivation to return to your old aquarium and see how the fish are doing. You’re bound to have a good time.
