Mortal Kombat 2 is the exciting sequel to the Mortal Kombat remake that came out on HBO Max in 2021. Though the public reception of the first movie was not positive, a sequel was slated for production, and two trailers were dropped earlier this year with a release date of the upcoming movie on October 24, 2025. However, Warner Bros has announced a delay for the sequel all the way into the summer of next year. Here’s all you need to know about the delay and the reason behind it.

Mortal Kombat 2 Is Now Releasing in May 2026

Warner Bros has announced that they are now delaying the sequel to the titular series until May 2026. The Mortal Kombat remake had mixed reviews; however, it did relatively well at the box office, bringing in $84.4 million globally, even through the Covid pandemic. Now, Mortal Kombat 2 will continue the storyline of the first film, adding iconic characters such as Johnny Cage, Shao Khan, Katana, Baraka, Jade, Noob Saibot, Sindel, and Quan Chi. Warner Bros has gone all out with this star-studded cast of characters in this sequel, adding to the hype and the excitement from fans of the game series.

What Does Deadline Have to Say About It?

Deadline has confirmed the delay of the movie, citing,

“the Simon McQuoid-directed sequel is bound to deliver tons more in mid-May than staying in the crowded late October frame where 20th Century Studios’ Jeremy Allen White Bruce Springsteen movie, Springsteen Deliver Me From Nowhere, and the next Colleen Hoover feature take, Paramount’s Regretting You, exists. Also, Halloween is the next weekend, and well, that’s not a so-vibrant time at the box office.”

Slating the movie to release in October would have been detrimental to the movie’s success at the box office because of how jam-packed October is for movie releases. Bumping the sequel’s release is a smart move from Warner Bros, which we can expect to be an even bigger hit than the first movie. Fans of the series do not need to worry, as delaying the release will add to the hype for this next one! Mortal Kombat 2 is now set to release on May 15, 2026, and we can expect the release to be bigger than ever.
