MSI 2025: G2 Esports Versus Furia Shocks the World

The first match of the Midseason Invitational has come and gone in a blur. Furia took G2 Esports to the limit, bringing the series to game five. G2 showed plenty of signs of weakness with BrokenBlade, especially having one of his weakest series performances. South America has proven it deserves to be at MSI.

MSI Match One Game One

Summary

BrokenBlade struggled in the early laning phase against Guigo’s Aatrox, dying twice before Grubs spawned. An attempted dive on BrokenBlade for Furia failed, leading to kills for Ahri and Vi. The mid-game went from bad to worse for G2 as more gold and kills went into the hands of Furia. The game went from bad to worse for G2, as every play they made was unsuccessful. After they took Baron, they charged down the mid-lane to end the game in 28 minutes.

Summary

Despite the first blood for Brokenblade’s Jax, his early game struggles continued, giving gold to Guigo and Tutsz. G2 managed to stabilize the mid-game, earning themselves a gold and objective lead. A poor engagement from Furia, followed by their getting caught near the Atakan, allowed G2 to blow open the game. G2 slowed the game down to choke Furia out of the game until they got the game-winning fight to equalize the series.

Summary

Across all lanes in the early game, G2 managed to force out ultimates and got first blood on Skewmond’s Trundle. Objectives went in favor of G2 as they picked up the first two Drakes and Rift Herald. Furia denied G2’s Drake stacking after a nervy fight in the top lane. G2 overplayed near Atakan, allowing Furia to take the first significant gold advantage in the game.

It was Furia’s turn to overextend, with Ayu getting caught on the mid-wave, allowing G2 to get four kills and two tier 2 towers. G2 seemed to gain control over the game with a 5k gold lead, but with G2 members getting caught, they allowed them back into the game. On  Soul point, G2 regathered themselves to win the fight and end the game.

Summary

BrokenBlade’s lane weaknesses continued as he lost his flash to Sion and died twice in quick succession. The first skirmish of the game went fully in favor of Furia as they generated an early 1k gold lead. The South American contingent continued their dominance in fights, steadily building up a strong gold lead. While the game went on for 31 minutes, Furia was always in control, and they sent the series to a silver scrapes.

Summary

Furia earned the first non-top lane first blood, but G2 managed to secure multiple kills to get a significant gold advantage with a scaling Senna. The fight for the third Drake started with Brokenblade going down. With G2’s ultimate combos, they take down three members. They secured the Drake and Feats. G2 continued their dominance in game five to secure an unassailable lead. After G2’s Baron, they pushed down mid-lane for the victory.

Reaction

Furia showed the international stage that they are here to challenge the best in the world. While G2 was not at its best, Furia took on the challenge and forced the mistakes. G2 will need to shore up their mistakes in future series if they want to be the EU hope. If the South American outfit continues this form, they might qualify for the Bracket Stage.
