Crafting the Set

Designing this crossover was a massive undertaking. Gavin Verhey and Zakeel Gordon led the team, blending mechanics from 16 Final Fantasy games into MTG. They created Saga creatures and transforming cards, like Cecil’s journey from dark knight to holy warrior in Final Fantasy IV. In an EDHREC interview, Verhey explained how playtesting won over even non-Final Fantasy players. The art team also shone, crafting 50 woodblock-style cards inspired by Japanese culture.
