In the midst of Mario Kart World’s hype and the controversy about its price, there is an obvious question lurking around. Why hasn’t Nintendo announced a new mainline Super Mario game for the Nintendo Switch 2? After all, the mainline games tend to be focal points for Nintendo systems. Well, now Nintendo has hinted that it might not be long before we get news of a new mainline game.

“Stay Tuned”

According to IGN, Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America’s president, stated in a CNN interview to “stay tuned” about a new mainline Mario game. He said, “We have a long, long catalog, and a long list of (intellectual property) that I’m sure will make its way to the platform.” The iconic plumber will, of course, be present at the Switch 2’s launch in Mario Kart World, but Nintendo consoles tend to feel incomplete until they have a mainline game in their catalog.

How Much Will the Next Game Cost?

Of course, there’s another obvious question about a new mainline Mario game. How much will it cost when Nintendo has already announced controversial high prices for other Switch 2 games? Highlighted games such as Donkey Kong Bananza will cost $70, while the anticipated Mario Kart World will cost a whopping $80. If Nintendo thinks they can charge that much for a Mario spin-off game, how much will they charge for a mainline game? The answer might terrify gamers.

Mario’s Possibilities on the Switch 2

Gamers have been longing for a sequel to Super Mario Odyssey, Mario’s main journey on the Switch 1, for years. However, since Nintendo has a history of innovation with the series, it is more likely that the Switch 2’s entry will be a brand new story instead of a continuation of an older one. Perhaps it will utilize some of the Switch 2’s new features, such as the mouse control with the Joy-Cons, in interesting ways. Since the Switch 1 had Super Mario Odyssey and Super Mario Wonder, along with new versions of the Wii-U’s Super Mario 3D World and New Super Mario Bros. U, there might be more than one adventure on the Switch 2.

What Else Awaits?

Since Bowser mentioned “a long, long catalog,” one also has to wonder if he was teasing at other games besides this one. When will we get news of a new Legend of Zelda game? How about the next Animal Crossing entry? Will F-Zero fans finally get the new game they’ve been waiting for? We’ll have to wait and see.
