Launching on April 10th on Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation, Blue Prince was met with solidly positive reviews on Steam and showcased a beautifully stylized world for the player to explore. Combining elements of strategy and mystery, this puzzle game encourages the player to build their own map of Mt. Holly, a 45-room estate left by an eccentric relative, in search of the elusive 46th room.
As with all new releases, there were a few reported bugs, but Blue Prince’s dev team has really stepped up with three patches to the game since its release, the last being announced on April 24th, patch 1.03.
The patch incorporates the following changes as listed on Steam on April 24th:
While it’s currently unclear how these changes will affect the gameplay going forward, what is clear is that the game devs are eager to make Blue Prince into a masterpiece. This third patch, like the first two, has come quickly in response to the consumers’ comments and will hopefully make for a more enriching experience. It is, after all, always nice to know that you won’t accidentally stunlock yourself into a dead end after putting all the effort into achieving that perfect run.
The initial positive response to Blue Prince seems to come primarily from its respect for the art of waiting, a phenomenon usually found in the puzzle game Goats, as people take a step back to consolidate their information in long-winded sessions of note-taking. Players have praised the challenge rating of the puzzles and the deck-building system that rarely gives them a dud run, encouraging them to flex those engorged spatial brain muscles to create pathways across the house and find that elusive 46th room.
If you do manage to find yourself on a path that meanders away from your intended purpose, though, never fear. The game is loaded with memorable content, making even those rare dud runs useful fodder, providing insight and intrigue for the moment that everything finally falls into place and you’re able to open that last logic-defying door. Now that you don’t have to fear boxing yourself into a particular area as well, the exploration side of this game is looking to be a notable strength for this playable offering.
With the first two Blue Prince patches coming on the 15th and 18th of April, respectively, it’s always encouraging to see that the game devs are not becoming complacent. As with the way they expect their players to interact with their wonderful game, these devs seem intent on taking a step back to listen to the community and work out the answers to their problems as efficiently as possible.
It will be interesting to see how much smoother they can make this already solid game and how marvelously immersive the true end product is going to be.
