The wild story of fan outrage that is Tekken 8 Season 2 may be heading for its next chapter as they prepare to add an already controversial fighter to Tekken 8’s roster. That fighter is none other than Fahkumram, the Muay Thai juggernaut that is banned in tournaments worldwide in the game’s last installment, Tekken 7. While this character reveal doesn’t give us any info about how Fahkumram will play in Tekken 8, the timing is questionable. Tekken 8 developers have already been under fire from heavy fan criticism since the release of Season 2, and this addition may only serve to add fuel to the fire.
Before we talk about the mixed reactions from fans and briefly talk about the state of Tekken 8 currently, let’s talk about the reveal itself. The reveal took place at EVO Japan, one of the premier fighting game tournaments of the year. A new DLC character announcement is always going to be the biggest headline. However, the trailer also announced that the next patch to Season 2, version 2.02, is coming on June 5.
With the release of this patch is also a cosmetic item collaboration with Karate Kid Legends, a new movie coming to theatres soon. Players who purchase the stage pass will also be excited to see the reveal of the colorful new Pac-Pixels stage featuring Pac-Man himself in the background.
What we see of Fahkumram himself is very limited. The reveal date is not yet set, only announcing that he is coming in summer 2025. The reveal trailer is only about 45 seconds long and starts with a chaotic scene of multiple natural disasters. Suddenly, lightning cracks the sky. A steel wall drops from amidst the clouds, almost like a giant metal briefcase. The steel wall bursts open, revealing Fahkumram kicking his way free.
He breaks his arms loose from the metal shackles binding him and steps out of his prison. He walks towards the camera and says, “You’re my next victim” before the camera cuts away. Unfortunately, that’s all we get of the character for now. We will have to wait until the official gameplay trailer from Tekken 8 to see how he may have changed from Tekken 7.
Tekken 8’s balance changes since the start of Season 2 have been called one of the worst patches in fighting game history. While every character in the franchise has its fan base, powerful characters are a good way to increase the hype. Many players are also questioning the timing of this decision. There are multiple balance adjustments scheduled for Season 2, and with time, the quick patches have helped.
However, it is a concern for fans who feel like Season 2 has made offense too dominant and the game is far too aggressive, as that is exactly what made Fahkumram a problem in Tekken 7. We will have to wait and see his gameplay overview, but Muay Thai is an offense-first, hyper-aggressive fighting style in both the real world and the Tekken universe. Are Tekken 8 developers going to be able to balance out their game, or are they just doubling down on their mistakes?
