A new horror game, Nightmare Frontier, has been revealed with a new gameplay trailer. Developer Ice Code Games has taken an entirely fresh spin on the classic extraction shooter set-up. Not only does the game introduce elements of horror, but it also takes inspiration from classic turn-based tactical games like XCOM to perfect an intriguing new meld. With early access on the horizon, players will have the opportunity to see how the developers pull the combination off.

Nightmare Frontier Juggles Many Different Styles

Nightmare Frontier aims to be many things at once, something that players have been seeing come out of the tactical genre a lot in recent months. In this case, the spin is horror wrapped in the essence of an extraction shooter/looter. The goal of Ice Code Games was to take inspiration from the best of the turn-based tactical genre, with “gun-n-slash” combat similar to XCOM, and piece it together with elements of loot and a risk-reward system that pushes players to the brink.

As reported on IGN, the team describes what they are to accomplish with Nightmare Frontier:

“The story of Nightmare Frontier unfolds in an alternate version of 19th-century America, shortly after a mysterious event that forever changed the world. The line between reality and an unknown horror has started to fade, and those who remain are left to uncover what truly happened that night – and what’s behind the titular Nightmare.

The streets were overrun by monsters emerging from the dark abysses of the terror dimension – the survivors called these creatures Dreadweavers. These beings are the physical embodiment of people’s deepest fears. Players will step into the shoes of the ringleader, who, despite overwhelming terror, finds a chance for survival in this new reality. Leading other scavengers, they venture deep into the city, risking everything they have left in search of loot.”

If it is still hard for you to visualize what Nightmare Frontier is aiming for, the team says to “think XCOM meets Hunt: Showdown with a dash of Cthulhu thrown in.” Well, that is certainly a mix, but a highly intriguing one. The further a player gets, the more the Nightmare Level increases, and this is where the risk-reward plays out. Putting your team in more danger makes it harder to win, but the team earns more and better loot in the process.
