The Nintendo Switch 2 has been the subject of controversy ever since its Nintendo Direct reveal in April. Most of the controversy comes from the console’s $450 price tag and the fact that its games will cost up to $80. However, there has also been talk about the system being too similar to the Switch 1 and not innovative enough. Now, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa is addressing those claims, stating that certain Switch 2 games would be impossible on the Switch 1.
According to Nintendo Everything, Furukawa stated that the original Switch “has been blessed with many good fortunes, and even in its ninth year, many customers are playing it.” However, he acknowledged the advancements in hardware since the Switch 1’s release and stated, “We aim to make the Nintendo Switch 2 the new standard for Nintendo Switch by creating hardware that continues to give fresh surprises.” Indeed, the Switch 2’s Direct emphasized its hardware features, such as the 1080p screen and 120 fps capability.
Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza are two of the most discussed games for the Switch 2. Furukawa claims that both games would be impossible on the Switch 1. He says that “We believed that Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza have proposed new ways of playing that could not be realized on the Nintendo Switch.” Both games will feature large worlds to explore freely, and in Donkey Kong Bananza, you can even destroy the world.
Furukawa acknowledges that “the Nintendo Switch 2 may not look like it has changed much.” He goes on to add that, “in reality, both the hardware and peripherals have been redesigned from scratch, and we feel that it is a very Nintendo-like product, filled with various ingenuity and the attention to detail of Nintendo’s development team, who develop hardware and software together.”
The Switch 2 will undoubtedly be more powerful than its predecessor in terms of specs. However, given that Nintendo is known for its innovation, Furukawa’s claims aren’t likely to soothe fans who were expecting to be wowed by the console’s gimmicks. Still, with the system’s mouse controls, game chat, and more powerful specs, fans will find a lot to love about the Switch 2. Now, if only Nintendo would lower the price . . .
