The Nintendo Switch 2 is finally here, and Mr and Mrs General Gaming Public have gone wild for this new handheld console. With pre-orders closing in a minute, midnight queues to pre-order at all, and analysts confirming expectations of selling from 15 million to 20 million units over the fiscal year, it looks like the Nintendo Switch 2 is off to an amazing start. But what games are available to pick up already for the new console?
If you’re into Sega games at all, then you’re in luck if you’ve managed to get your dirty mits on a Nintendo Switch 2 because four of their top titles have been ported over to the new console. Sega has gone for an eclectic array of their finest titles to draw in those rabid gamers, including: Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut, Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army, Sonic x Shadow Generations, and Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S. So strap in, grab that new Switch 2, and let’s explore some of the finest Sega games together.
As one might expect from a gangster-centred game, this is a very high-energy, action-packed affair that the director’s cut takes to the next level with the addition of the online multiplayer mode. Players can now scream in terror (or bloodlust) with their best friends as they face down various mafia members or experience the captivating neon nightlife of a re-imagined 80’s Tokyo Red Light District. The story is compelling and sharp, with the game being unafraid of letting a cut scene run on too long if it’s in the interest of character growth. The characters themselves, therefore, feel authentic, and the power struggle at the heart of this campaign feels more organic.
The director’s cut now features an English dub for those who want a different audio experience, and the best new feature of all is, of course, the ability to save anywhere you like rather than running desperately for save points all over the map.
Raidou Remasted is an action role-playing Sega game shown through the eyes of the young Raidou Kuzunoha as he works for the Narumi Detective Agency, solving supernatural cases. In a specific case, he and Narumi meet with a mysterious schoolgirl who asks them to kill her. Instead, she’s taken captive by demons, and Raidou is forced to traverse the whole of Tokyo, including a ‘dark world’ version inhabited solely by demons, to find her.
The game has been praised for its smooth combat system, a real-time battle system that is easy to pick up and rewarding when you get the hang of some of the tougher combos. The remastered version includes a ‘save anywhere’ feature, thank goodness, because some of us have to put our games down to get back to work, and a brand new ending that lets you see what might happen if Raidou doesn’t, spoiler alert, kick the bucket at the end of the game. The graphics have, of course, been updated, the definition made sharper, but the game retains its 2006 style with unapologetic abandon to make this game feel intensely nostalgic and brand new at the same time.
No console release is complete without an iconic Sonic game to offer, and the Nintendo Switch 2 does not get off lightly there. Sonic x Shadow Generations is the Sega game to get. Taking elements of the old 2D platforms and combining them with new, exciting 3D maps, the game gives ample room to both Sonic and Shadow for them to shine on their own turf, as well as paying an enjoyable homage to those early releases.
The map designs are a pleasure to behold, and the gameplay is quirky and interesting, preserving the fast-paced, attention-grabbing style that Sonic usually brings to any game bearing his name while introducing new and innovative elements to stir the imagination.
This new release features a few new storylines that allow Shadow and Sonic’s respective adventures to interweave and overlap one another, and the introduction of the fractalling portal at the beginning of Shadow’s story gives a Marvel-like gravitas to the situation that makes the player automatically compare this to Dr Strange saving the world from interdimensional gods. Overall, a fantastic addition to the Sonic franchise and a must-grab for Nintendo Switch 2 owners, whether you’ve managed to nab yourself a console now or if you’re still waiting.
If you’re not really up for any of the action-packed Sega games above, then Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S might just be the game for you. Combining the mechanics of Puyo Puyo and Tetris in a game that can be either or both together on literally the same grid, this offers something for all the spatially gifted gamers out there.
You wouldn’t really expect a classic puzzle game to have a riveting storyline attached, but Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S has just that, and not in the way where you want to skip all the cutscenes and dialogue just so you can get back to taking down walls of multi-coloured blocks either. The characters are funny and quirky, saying things that make players want to spit out their orange juice, and each interaction sets up for the next stage in this little puzzle staple for the new Nintendo Switch 2.
The adventure mode, which features the story, does insist on you playing either Puyo Puyo or Tetris for some of its level progressions, but honestly, if you’re buying a game entitled Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S, then you’re going to be a fan of both, right?
It looks like the hype for the Nintendo Switch 2 isn’t exactly unfounded. With such awesome titles becoming available, and so many different games to offer, Sega fans are sure to be pleased with this selection of some of the best Sega remasters and remixes available. Were there any other Sega games that you’d want to petition for a release on the Switch 2? What’s that? The Michael Jackson Sega Megadrive masterpiece circa the 1980s? Perhaps we should sign a petition.
For more information about the games, you can check out the information on their official sites or on Steam. You can also pick up (or at least try to) a Nintendo Switch 2 at any local retailer or online now.
