As the Nintendo Switch 2’s June 5th release date draws nearer and nearer, the hype, controversy, and speculation increase. With its $450 price tag, the Switch 2 will need some spectacular games to justify paying that much money for it. While Nintendo has been advertising some stellar-looking games, there is an oddity that has gamers puzzled: the Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour.
Nintendo advertises the Welcome Tour, “a virtual exhibit that offers an inside look at the Nintendo Switch 2 system.” Using the aesthetics of a museum inside the Switch 2, players can investigate exhibits to learn tidbits about how the Switch 2 works and play minigames. Some tidbits might be useful information on how to use the Switch 2, while others might be fun trivia.
The Welcome Tour will take up 2 GB of the Switch 2’s disk space. While the Switch 2 will contain 256 GB of storage, you could probably use that 2 GB for some indie titles, and you might get more enjoyment and playtime out of them. In addition, it will cost $9.99 to download the Welcome Tour, which seems like a steep price for what essentially looks like a glorified instruction manual.
One of the most controversial games for the first Nintendo Switch was 1-2-Switch. This collection of minigames cost $59.99, even though it was basically just a demonstration of what you could do with the Switch’s Joy-Con controllers. Many gamers argued that 1-2-Switch should have just come with the console as a pack-in game. At least this time, Nintendo isn’t trying to sell the Welcome Tour as a full game. They are being honest that it is basically a dressed-up tutorial, but it’s still a tutorial that they’re charging $9.99 to experience.
If the Welcome Tour were included with the Switch 2 as a free download, it would look like a fun little experience. However, when Nintendo is already charging infamously high prices for games like the $80 Mario Kart Tour and the $70 Donkey Kong Bananza, it’s hard not to see charging $9.99 for a glorified tutorial as a greedy move. It might be a wiser decision to save that 2 GB of disk space for some indie games.
