Hideo Kojima’s reaction towards overwhelmingly positive tester feedback for Death Stranding 2: On the Beach was surprising to say to least. Specifically, Kojima expressed conflicted feelings regarding these reviews, stating a preference for creating controversial games rather than conventional blockbusters demanding high approval ratings. During an interview with Game Informer, he revisited these comments, explaining his desire for a divisive player response. In the current gaming era, does the gaming developer’s deliberate pursuit of controversy stem from a belief that universally praised games lack lasting cultural impact?

Death Stranding 2: Kojima’s Bold Gamble

Through interpreter Aki Saito, Kojima elaborated his point to the public. In his view, while blockbuster games often achieve broad appeal, they fade quickly from cultural memory. This explains why he didn’t enjoy reading the positive reviews, wanting Death Stranding 2 to endure and resonate with players for decades.  To achieve this, the developer seeks to create challenging, memorable experiences designed to withstand the test of time rather than seeking universal critical or commercial validation.

As contemporary entertainment is overly easy to consume and digest, Kojima intentionally designed Death Stranding 2 to provoke both passionate admiration and strong dislike. Moreover, he believed that obtaining true innovation necessitates this division, drawing parallels to Metal Gear, which required a decade to gain widespread recognition. Furthermore, the developer was concerned that the universal praise during the game’s testing phase exceeded his predictions, suggesting that it may lack bold innovation. However, whether this pursuit of deliberate controversy risks alienating a significant portion of the potential audience is tough to call.

When addressing the future of Kojima Productions, Kojima explicitly stated he opposed successors merely replicating his design approach. Since he believed the studio would fail if it adopted that strategy, he advocated for new creative directions after his tenure. After Death Stranding 2 launches on the PlayStation 5 on June 26, the developer will work on the Xbox-exclusive OD and the spy-action title Physint. Additionally, his collaboration with A24 on a feature film, which he may direct, may also become a reality.

Reedus Trusts Kojima’s Genius, Not Understanding It

Norman Reedus, who plays the main character Sam Porter Bridges, expressed his thoughts working with Hideo Kojima, describing his experience on Death Stranding 2 as uniquely surreal. According to The Walking Dead actor, Kojima’s unconventional directing style was a highlight. Specifically, he recalled instances where Kojima issued abrupt instructions like demanding he pick up a baby doll and cry during motion capture sessions.

Reedus also emphasized the inherent strangeness of mocap work as he had to wear skintight suits covered in sensors, making simulating intimate scenes challenging, resulting in accidental collisions with co-stars like Léa Seydoux or Mads Mikkelsen. Despite initial confusion, Kojima’s deliberately abstract direction, exemplified by commands to “cry because the strand of the stray,” paradoxically enhanced creative performance. That said, Reedus admits to frequently not understanding Kojima’s specific narrative concepts during filming.

Nevertheless, while expressing immense trust in and admiration for the director, he called Kojima brilliant with mind-blowing visions for gaming’s future. To reinforce this sentiment, the actor humorously imitates Kojima’s direction style, showcasing his fondness for the collaboration. What’s more, Kojima also acknowledged his own inherent weirdness, aligning with Reedus’ perspective. Recently, the developer promised a final trailer for Death Stranding 2, designed to provoke strong reactions, ultimately bringing success to the partnership, which thrives on mutual respect despite creative ambiguity.

A Death Stranding Film Adaptation

As Death Stranding 2: On The Beach is almost here, fans are gearing up to once again follow the story of Sam Porter Bridges, who aids in reconnecting a fragmented America. During an IGN interview, Reedus not only teased aspects of the sequel but also addressed the potential film adaptation. When the actor discussed portraying his character in the announced A24 film adaptation directed by Michael Sarnoski, he confirmed his interest in playing himself if offered the role. Although he acknowledged possessing limited current information about the film’s status, he expressed enthusiasm about a potential continuity between the game and its cinematic counterpart.
