The 20-year-old Mario RPG classic Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is making a comeback with a refurbished release on the Nintendo Switch platform. From its release date, gameplay, trailer, and story, here is everything you need to know about Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door’s Nintendo Switch release.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Release Date: May 23, 2024

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door will make its way to the Nintendo Switch on May 23, 2024. You can buy either the digital or physical copy of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door for the Nintendo Switch for $59.99.

Nintendo initially released Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door in 2004 for the GameCube as the second game in the Paper Mario series, following the original Paper Mario for the Nintendo 64. The series’ third game, Super Paper Mario, came out for the Wii back in 2007.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Story

The Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door game is a direct sequel to the original Paper Mario game. For Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, the game has a total of eight chapters plus a prologue.

The Thousand-Year Door is set in the Mushroom Kingdom, specifically in the town of Rogueport. It follows Mario as he navigates to locate the treasure from a map Princess Peach gave him.

Also, it would not be a Mario game if the princess itself was not missing, and this is a plot point of the game as well. In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, the X-Nauts, which are led by Grodus, catch the princess as they, in turn, are also looking for the same treasure Mario is looking for.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Art Style and Gameplay

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is a role-playing video game combining traditional and nontraditional RPG elements.

The Paper Mario series stands out with its unique, drawing-based art style that most gamers and critics alike adore. In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, you once again control a two-dimensional version of Mario in a world designed to resemble paper.

The paper-like visuals of the game are not just for aesthetics as they are also a key part of the game’s mechanics. In the game, Mario gains abilities that would suit a character made out of paper, such as being able to pass through narrow gaps and turning himself into a paper airplane to fly.

As for the game’s battle mechanics, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door has turn-based battles, which are set on a literal theatre stage.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Characters

As for the playable characters in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, you will be playing as the plumber hero himself for most parts of the game. Besides Mario though, you will also be playing as Bowser and Princess Peach at certain points of the game’s story.

Throughout the game, the player can also opt to use assistant characters for their unique abilities. There are 7 assistant characters in total:

  • Goombella the Goomba
  • Koops the Koopa
  • The wind spirit Madame Flurrie
  • A player-named Yoshi
  • A shadow character named Vivian
  • Admiral Bobbery the Bob-omb
  • Ms. Mowz the Squeek.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door also features a ton of characters as NPCs from Mario’s expansive universe. From recurring Mario characters like Boo to the countless Goomba and Koopa characters, expect some of your favorite characters to make an appearance in this game.

A Paper Mario Classic

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door’s original release garnered much applause from both gamers and critics alike. Some even consider it the best game out of all the Paper Mario series.

As such, some fans are ecstatic upon hearing the news of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door coming to the Nintendo Switch.

“I’ve rarely wanted a game to sell well so badly, been dreaming about this for years,” one fan comments on the game’s announcement.

“I [have] never known my grandpa to be someone to enjoy videogames but he heard the theme song over my phone and asked. His eyes seemed to soften a little and asked me when and how to play it since it was his favorite game and [he] hadn’t been able to play it since his gamecube so many years ago. I’ll buy it for him,” another fan shared one of their personal interactions regarding the game.

“This legendary childhood classic is about to be a legendary adulthood classic,” another fan exclaims.
