Persona 5, a JRPG developed and produced by Atlus Games and Sega, has been a massive success globally since its release in 2016, and the “Royal” version that came out in 2019 only further enhanced it. In fact, it is Persona 5 Royal that really brought the entire series, part of an even larger Megami Tensei franchise, to the Western masses. Its critical acclaim has been a large part of Atlus’ push to remake and remaster many of their older games for release in the North American market and worldwide, a strategy that has been highly successful and led to an RPG resurgence. Now, the spinoff mobile game will be coming to the worldwide market officially, as well.
Last year, a Persona 5 spin-off gacha-style game, The Phantom X, was released for mobile markets in China, Taiwan, and South Korea, among other countries, and saw a solid baseline of success. It was very surprising that the game was not released in Japan, given the popularity of the original Persona 5 JRPG, on which the mobile game is based. This oversight is being rectified, as the game will be released in both Japan and North America markets on June 26.
According to a press release regarding the game, “Encompassed in the unique turn-based RPG gameplay and setting of Persona 5, players will lead a double life as a student and a Phantom Thief with a brand-new protagonist and band of Phantom Thieves. During the day, players will build up life experience as a student and engage in various activities such as hanging out with your friends and part-time jobs, while at night, they will sneak into the cognitive dungeons to steal Treasures and change the twisted desires of corrupt adults.”
Atlus and Sega also released an announcement trailer for Persona 5: The Phantom X:
Persona 5: The Phantom X promises both exclusive characters as well as familiar retreads from the base game. As a Gacha game, players should expect to spend some money, as the format typically is built around spending money for credits that allow players to access more pulls, exclusive items, and new characters, among others. The game revolves around special events and random prize pulls. That means that the game is not for everyone, but gacha does have a large market, and for fans of the original game, it may be worth it to try this spinoff.
Persona 5: The Phantom X is not the first spin-off that the base game has had. Aside from the royal version, the team has also released Tactics and Strickers, both console games. It is not surprising to see Sega and Atlus attempt to continue to capitalize on the popularity of the Persona franchise right now. The game should garner attention and fans. It will be released globally on June 26, not only for iOS and Android, but also for PC. If you are a fan of Persona 5, the game could be one for you to check out!
