Pokémon is one of the most successful video game franchises of all time, and by far the most financially successful JRPG, even among behemoth series like Final Fantasy and Monster Hunter. The allure of raising your very own pocket monsters as pets and living in a world among these adorable and unique creatures has captivated kids and adults alike for decades and generations. The game has spun on into anime shows, movies, board games, card games, spin-off video games, and pop culture merchandise. It has also inspired quite a bit of fan fiction and fan art, and one has recently taken the internet by storm.
Of all the Pokémon in the long and storied collection, Eevee is the one that has offered the most intrigue to fans. What is so unique about this adorable fox-inspired creature is how many different types it can evolve into. For those more unfamiliar with the series, each pocket monster is assigned a type or pair of types (ex., Fire, Water and Dark, Normal, etc.) and those types typically stay similar throughout the evolutions. Eevee starts as a normal type; however, by using different items or tasks, Eevee can evolve into 8 different Pokémon, each with its own unique typing.
Naturally, this has left room for plenty of fan inspiration, as well as player strategy. As currently constructed, there are 8 Eeveelutions, not including the normal type Eevee, which include: Flareon (Fire), Jolteon (Thunder), Vaporeon (Water), Umbreon (Dark), Leafeon (Grass), Sylveon (Fairy), Glaceon (Ice), and Espeon (Psychic). Given there are a total of 18 different types in the game, the natural expectation is that the other types could get their own evolution as well, so Pokémon fans are consistently designing new looks to fit these other types.
Currently, the nine missing Pokémon types are Fighting, Flying, Poison, Ground, Rock, Bug, Ghost, Steel, and Dragon. Some of these types are easier to design than others. One fan in particular, Patient-Ambition9826, is known for coming up with many Eeveelution designs, and his newest one has made its way around the internet. The ground-type Eeveelution has been dubbed “Soileon”.
As reported by Game Rant, “According to the artist, the design of this Eeveelution was conceptualized as a regional Pokémon unique to Brazil. Patient-Ambition9826 notes that the hat is based upon a hat that can be seen in the northeastern areas of Brazil. Meanwhile, Soileon appears brown in its standard form and green in its Shiny variant as a reference to the weather and vegetation of the area, with the artist noting that the backlands appear dry and brown, but once the rain arrives, they quickly become extremely green due to the vegetation that grows there under those conditions.”
It has been a long time since we have been provided with a new Eevee evolution from Game Freak. It was rumored that another evolution was due out at one point, but was scrapped because it was too similar to a fan art. The developer certainly knows Eevee is popular, so it is surprising that a former staple has not grown even further. This has some Pokémon fans scared that any time someone creates fan art, it could be further impeding Eevee’s progress.
Ultimately, if Game Freak wants to make a new Eevee, they will. What is cool about the fan art is how it does fit seamlessly into the already developed designs. It is clear that fans are clamouring to see a new eeveelution again, and it is equally clear that it could be done. Whether fans get their wish or not is still to be determined. As more comes out about the upcoming Gen 10, perhaps news of a new Eevee will leak. Fingers crossed.
