Cerebral is an upcoming psychological horror game set to launch on Steam soon. Developed by Youviverse, this game is like Stanley Parable on crack, but it ups the ante on the horror. The most interesting aspect of this game is the significance of death. It’s a simple idea: dying makes the game easier, but it erases your mind. How does this work? Here’s a breakdown of the trailer and all that was shown.
The trailer begins with what I would describe as one of the creepiest faces I’ve ever seen, accompanied by a countdown of your mental health percentage. The trailer keeps cutting to the many times you wake up in that room with that face every time you fail a puzzle. From that creepy, creepy face that keeps telling us to surrender our minds to that terrifying creature walking on the ceiling towards us, to a surprise under our bed, it seems we are in for a trippy nightmare in this game. It’s scary, a bit confusing, and very dark.
There is a very strong emphasis on death and mental health in this game. Every time you die, and it looks like the first time you do is literally 5 seconds after you load in, the puzzles you encounter in the game become easier. A backwards concept in games, but fitting for a Stanley Parable-type game like this one. Every time you die, it also erases key information that would help you get out of this nightmare. With that, your mental health is tied to the decisions you make and how successful you are with the puzzles. This system increases the tension and immersion you feel while playing, making it all the more terrifying.
Cerebral is a mind-boggling experience, from weird and disturbing images to intense gameplay that raises the tension of the players the further you progress in the game. If I understood this correctly, even draining your sanity doesn’t end the game for you at all; it just resets your progress. It’s pretty rage-inducing if you ask me, which is another way this game messes with your head. This game is described as a slow-burning type of horror, and the look and feel of this game looks pretty amazing. Cerebral is available to wishlist now and is set to launch on Steam soon. Don’t forget to wishlist so you can receive updates on release.
