So we’re in a bit of a predicament when it comes to Red Dead Redemption’s Rob Wiethoff, the voice of John Marston from the game. The other week, he teased fans with a comment about “exciting news” that he couldn’t reveal—backed up by other actors from the franchise.
This led many to speculate that news was coming about a rework of Red Dead Redemption 2 for current-gen consoles, with the potential of a 60 FPS patch that everyone and their grandmother has been waiting for.
However, the news was a little more watered down than we were expecting. That “exciting news” turned out to be just a cast reunion in Florida… way to work the crowd, my dude!
Wiethoff knew what he was doing when he made those comments during that stream:
“I got such exciting news. I can’t share with you right now. It’s absolutely killing me. But end of this week—hopefully sooner. Not as soon as tomorrow, but definitely before Friday.
Oh my goodness, the news that I have to share—and I won’t be the only one sharing it—I cannot wait for you to know what’s going on.
And that’s all I can say. That’s all I can think about right now.
You will almost soon enough. I’m so excited, I truly cannot think about anything else—especially playing this game—other than I want to tell you something so bad.”
Now, this would have been a pretty exciting announcement—if there hadn’t been expectations of a Red Dead Redemption 2 revamp. But Wiethoff has since backed away from the statement and explained that he doesn’t make announcements for Rockstar Games, which—fair enough—and that he understands he may have misled some folks with what he said.
It was on Reddit that a post surfaced with a promotional image from the National Gaming Expo, set to take place in Tampa, Florida, from August 8th–10th. The promo revealed that the entire main cast from both Red Dead Redemption and Red Dead Redemption 2 will be at the NGE for a huge meet and greet.
Wiethoff’s original comment does line up with the publishing date of this news, with both he and Clark being obvious components in this meet and greet. So, a lot of fans settled on the suggestion that this is what he was talking about.
So, no 60 FPS update for Red Dead Redemption 2 or anything to suggest playability on another console, which is fine! It just seems like the communication wires got crossed between fan expectations and what was actually happening.
The meet and greet should still be an exciting event for fans of Red Dead Redemption, so it’s not a loss in the slightest.
