Donkey Kong Bananza is one of the most highly anticipated games for the Nintendo Switch 2. The adventure will involve platforming and exploring a large world while also destroying it. Now, a rumor is circulating that you might be able to enjoy the exploration and destruction with friends.
The official Nintendo site does not specify whether or not Donkey Kong Bananza will include multiplayer. However, the game is apparently listed on Nintendo’s site under “Local Multiplayer Games.” Is this a mistake? Or does this mean that you and a friend will be able to bash your way through Donkey Kong Bananza‘s open world together?
The first three Donkey Kong Country games each contain two playable characters and the ability for two players to play either cooperatively or competitively. Since the trailer for Bananza gives us glimpses of side-scrolling sections similar to the original Donkey Kong Country games, the multiplayer could work in a similar way. In addition, the game’s destruction mechanics could also factor into the multiplayer. Perhaps one player would have to destroy parts of the world while another player digs down and explores what the first player uncovered. There could even be timed minigames where two players have to bash through the ground as fast as they can.
Given that Mario Kart World will support local multiplayer for up to eight players, could we see something similar with Bananza? Four or even eight players tearing through the world together could make for some delightful mayhem. Perhaps we could have four or eight players all digging through a cave or the ground at the same time, chasing after the same treasure. Or, the multiplayer could be cooperative and involve the players sharing the treasure they find. There could also be some exclusive online multiplayer modes like in the Luigi’s Mansion games.
In the age of online multiplayer, it’s important to remember the fun and chaos that comes with local multiplayer. If Donkey Kong Bananza will help to keep that tradition alive, I am all for it. However, even if the game turns out to be single-player, friends can still toss shells at each other in Mario Kart World.
