Silent Hill f has had a successful month since its release in September. Silent Hill producer Motoi Okamoto discusses in an exclusive interview some of the choices made by the development team in terms of game direction and the game’s development in its entirety. Here’s what was discussed during the interview and Okamoto’s thoughts on the use of AI in game development.

Silent Hill f’s Bold Choices Explained

Silent Hill f broke the mold of what the Silent Hill franchise was known for. Especially in terms of gameplay, many players expressed how different it felt from previous Silent Hill games. It doesn’t even take place in the town the game is named after. That was definitely a bold choice from the developers, but it definitely worked for the game. The shift in gameplay and setting from previous games made Silent Hill f stand out within the franchise. There was definitely some worry about this kind of departure from the original path of the series, but everything was so well executed that it felt like a necessary change.

What Does Motoi Okamoto Say About AI In Game Development

During a recent interview, Motoi Okamoto discusses Hideo Kojima’s comments about generative AI in game development. Kojima states that he thinks “of AI as more of a friend” who’d handle tedious tasks of game development that would cut costs and time. In his interview, Okamoto states,

“In that sense, it would be quite difficult for AI to replace works that take a significant departure from the original path of the series, like Silent Hill f,”

“AI may be able to put together a project for a sequel that takes place in the Silent Hill universe, but things like changing the story’s setting to Japan or getting Ryukishi07 on board as a writer are the kind of bold choices AI would never be able to make,”

Okamoto’s thoughts on AI are shared with a lot of other game producers like Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu and Arc Raiders lead Patrick Söderlund, who don’t necessarily believe in using AI to build games. I can definitely see arguments for both sides, but we’ll just have to wait and see how AI will change the gaming industry in the near future, and how it has already changed things.
