Players of The Sims are quite familiar with the cycle of new game release, followed by one after another of game packs to build up the content the previous version already had. But that’s not what’s happening with The Sims 4. But what is happening is both interesting and concerning. After almost 11 years, The Sims 4 is going strong. Now we’re going to see if EA can keep the momentum going or if they’re going to break everything they’ve built.
EA hasn’t shared much information about the plans for multiplayer mode in The Sims 4, but EA Entertainment President Laura Miele shared some info with Variety in a recent interview. She said that The Sims 4 “represents one of the biggest growth opportunities for Electronic Arts” and that they are “hard at work and feverishly developing what this [multiplayer] platform is going to be.” She went on to say that they’re “upgrading and refreshing all this technology, and we’ll be adding modes of play — but we also are going to be creating and updating the base technology and the base user experience on the core game.”
Let’s unpack that. Updating the technology is great, but it does cause some concern because, with significant changes to the technology behind the game, there are increased chances for breaking core gameplay. At least, that’s how it sounds. Added modes of play do sound interesting, but we’d love to ask EA to please not break the game we love. Sometimes it’s better to leave well enough alone.
In the interview, Miele also hinted at mobile versions of The Sims 4 and the work they’re doing on cozy games for The Sims. She referred to The Sims as “a significant ecosystem, and a universe of multiple ‘Sims’ experiences that we have to build on.” Regarding The Sims 5, she said that’s not in the plans. The decision was made with the players in mind.
“We put out over 85 content packs over the last 10 years on ‘The Sims 4,’ and so resetting that is not player friendly and not a good idea for our community.”
If you’ve purchased a large chunk of the available expansions, game packs, stuff packs, and kits, you’re probably glad to hear that. After all, many of us went through the same thing with each of the earlier iterations of The Sims. The monetary investment is only part of the story. It takes time to create and release so many updates to bring a new version to the same level of content as the last version.
The Sims Movie is also in development with Amazon, MGM Studios, and Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap. A movie adaptation has been in talks for years. The Sims franchise has been around for 25 years! And Miele mentioned Sims movie tie-ins for Sims games. That’s not unexpected. We’d be surprised if there weren’t tie-ins. That would be a missed opportunity for revenue and PR.
When you take all of the information together, it sounds like exciting things are coming for fans of The Sims 4. EA has been listening and paying attention to what players do and want. That’s why we’ve been seeing player-created builds in expansions and kits. So, whatever they have in the works, we’re sure they have the game’s best interest, and that of the players, at heart. Here’s to another decade of The Sims 4!
Happy Simming!
