Sonic Racing Crossworlds, a kart racing game featuring Sega’s most popular mascot for decades, releases this year. The high-speed karting action looks enthralling as is, but the team decided to reveal something new at the Summer Games Fest presentation on June 6. Coming to the new Sonic Racing are some crossovers sure to get Sega fans talking, and equally unexpected. It appears Sega is attempting to take a page out of Nintendo’s book by bringing in some outside characters that get players hyped to play as their favorites.
Aside from an all-new trailer, Sega announced four major crossovers for the upcoming Sonic Racing Crossworlds, getting the crowd at Summer Games Fest buzzing. The trailer itself features some heart-pounding action and speed from some of your Sonic universe favorites, with classic mechanics such as ring collection and power-ups showcased throughout. Still, that would have likely been met with a complacent reception, as it is nothing we have not seen in kart racing before. Until the crossovers were announced, that is.
Four new crossover characters will be arriving in Sonic Racing Crossworlds, and boy, are some of them doozies. The first crossover is Hatsune Miku, a Vocaloid software voicebank developed by Crypton Future Media. The second comes from one of Sega’s most popular JRPG series, Ichiban Kasuga of the current Like A Dragon mainline iterations (formerly the Yakuza series). The third is another character from a Sega and Atlus JRPG that has taken not just Japan by storm, but the Western markets as well, Joker from Persona 5.
The biggest bombshell, though, may have been the Minecraft crossover announced for Sonic Racing Crossworlds. Not only will Steve from Minecraft be a playable character, but there appear to be additional Minecraft-themed features, including a track that has the full Minecraft aesthetic. This should be exciting to see how it plays into the Sonic universe.
One final exciting announcement should make multiplayer racing a lot simpler in Sonic Racing Crossworlds. Sega has confirmed that the game will feature cross-platform multiplayer and matchmaking, allowing players to play with friends across any console they like. If one friend has the Switch 2 version while another is playing on PS5, they can still team up for some karting competitions!
