It’s a sad day, my friends. Pour one out for a real one. The PlayStation 4, the console that gave us some of the most legendary games of all time, is officially entering its sunset years. That’s right, Sony is starting to pull the plug on some of its services, and honestly, it feels like the end of an era.
I mean, can you believe it’s been almost 12 years since the PS4 first graced our living rooms? It feels like just yesterday I was unboxing that sleek, black machine, ready to dive into a new generation. Now, with the PS5 approaching its fifth birthday (time flies when you’re gaming!), it seems Sony is getting ready to gently nudge its predecessor into retirement.
So, what’s actually happening? According to some leaked documents, starting in Spring 2026, Sony will be discontinuing several legacy services for any new games submitted for the PS4. This isn’t a full shutdown… yet. But it’s a pretty big hint that the end is nigh.
The services being phased out for new titles include:
According to Sony, this is all to create a “more unified and scalable foundation across console generations.” I guess that’s corporate speak for, “Hey, it’s time to move on to the PS5, people!”
Not completely, but it’s definitely the writing on the wall. The PS4 is still a beast, with millions of people still firing it up for games like Call of Duty and EA FC. But let’s face it, most big AAA developers have already jumped ship to focus exclusively on the PS5. Sony themselves stopped releasing their major exclusives on the PS4 a while back.
So while your beloved PS4 isn’t turning into a paperweight overnight, this is a clear signal that its time in the spotlight is coming to a close. It’s a bittersweet moment, for sure. The PS4 gave us masterpieces like God of War, Uncharted 4, and The Last of Us Part II. It was a truly epic console generation.
What was your favorite PS4 memory? Let us know as we wave a tearful goodbye to a legend.
