There is another new psychological horror game coming to our libraries, this time by the developers of Buckshot Roulette. The game, s.p.l.i.t, recently dropped a release date trailer for the exciting new entry, and the launch is just around the corner. While the gameplay for the thriller is not long, it tackles a topic that is very real in today’s society: cybercrime. Mike Klubnika, the solo developer behind the project, has highlighted a unique style in both visual execution and gameplay design that draws people in through its striking creativity.

The premise behind the new indie horror, s.p.l.i.t, is that players must dive headfirst into the harrowing world of cybercrime and shut down a massive superstructure. How do you go about doing this, though? Through hacking the group’s network, of course. It is not that simple, of course. While the focus is on tactile raw terminal hacking, the delivery comes through lines of input through the game’s UI setup. Players are not alone, though, as other team technicians can help deliver malware attacks and other strategies to slow the bad guys down.

The official Steam page breaks down exactly what to expect. s.p.l.i.t is a short narrative-driven horror game, with a focus on raw terminal hacking using various commands. Throughout the game, you chat with your fellow technicians in order to plan and execute a malware attack. Regardless of the outcome, your story won’t be told for decades. Will you hold up your end?” Further in the description, they also state that ” The facility you and your crew infiltrate is a superstructure of unethical electronics. The daunting task is only made possible by careful planning, and vulnerabilities hidden deep below legacy code and engineering.”

Mike Klubnika also highlights specific features in s.p.l.i.t that set it apart from all the rest.

  • First person gameplay with diegetic & immersive UI.

  • An IRC chat where you gain intel, and learn more about the facility.

  • A terminal where you run software, navigate directories, and execute commands.

  • Detailed command prompt hacking puzzles with an emphasis on traditional inputs.

  • Original soundtrack

Keep in mind, s.p.l.i.t is a mature audience game. It covers themes of horror and violence. Possibly more triggering, however, are the themes and imagery of self-harm and suicide. Use discretion regarding the game. Check out the release date trailer below to see how each of these features plays out on screen.

Final Thoughts

Indie horror games continue to make waves in the gaming world, filling the void that larger studios leave in their wake. s.p.l.i.t hopes to join that list, delivering a short experience that balances new ideas with thoughtful and impactful gameplay. From what we see thus far, the developer is delivering on that goal. You can wishlist the game now on Steam, and it is due to release for PC on July 24th.
