A Steam user known as Sonix achieved a significant milestone for digital game collecting, becoming the first person to own over 40,000 games. By unlocking this achievement, the user gains the rarest game collector badge available on the platform. With Valve’s own tracking system confirming this unprecedented event, what will the future of Steam hoarding look like?

Steam’s Top Collector Is Playing a Different Game

According to the SteamDB rankings, the user SonixLegend reached this 40,000-game threshold on September 23, 2025. Their public profile reveals a library they built over 15 years on Steam, where they now possess 40,029 games. In addition to the record-breaking amount of games he owns, his immense collection includes 22,136 pieces of downloadable content and a wishlist containing 26,936 additional games.

Among dedicated Steam users, Sonix is something of a hidden legend, with records of their growing collection documented for years. Not only does the show unlock the badge at 9:31 AM, but their profile reveals an account level of 303. So, how does one even begin to play such a vast number of games? Upon viewing their profile, a free game from Valve called Alien Swarm is their favorite, having played over 550 hours.

SteamDB also provides a tool to estimate an account’s value based on the lowest historical prices for each item. Ultimately, this conservative metric reveals that the Sonix account’s value is approximately $250,000, which, if calculated at current full prices, would skyrocket to over $640,000. With Steam awards badges, players are rewarded for reaching various milestones, including the number of games owned, with tiers starting at just a single game.

Fortunately, there are multiple ways to earn badges, whether from purchases, free-to-play titles, or redeeming free codes, with the ultimate badge reserved for the 40,000-game mark. Sonix currently stands alone at the pinnacle of game collecting, with the closest competitor being another user, Ian Brandon Anderson, who owns 39,489 games. And taking the third spot is user ikun, who has 36,660 games. Again, what motivates someone to acquire such an enormous library?

The Man Who Actually Completed Steam

On September 23rd, a curious pattern emerged when the top collectors all updated their totals on the same day. The results of which showed that Sonix and Ian Brandon Anderson set their new records just ten minutes apart. Several other top collectors also registered new acquisitions on that date, suggesting a coordinated effort or a major sale. Another tracking site, Steam Ladder, reports a different figure for Sonix, placing their total at 44,228 games. That said, Valve’s official badge milestone remains the definitive record, confirming the 40,000-game achievement.

As revealed by this discrepancy between tracking sites, monitoring such massive collections presents a challenge that must be addressed. Whether the sheer scale of this collection renders it more of a numerical achievement than a practical library remains unknown. However, even a simple launch of each game once would be monumental, given the time required to pull it off. Currently, Sonix reigns supreme as the undisputed overlord of Steam sales, a title earned through an unparalleled dedication to acquisition.
