With the release of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie in April, Nintendo is rereleasing both of the beloved Galaxy games in a compilation next month. You might be thinking, “Hey, I already have the first Super Mario Galaxy as part of Super Mario 3D All-Stars – will I have to buy it again in order to get Galaxy 2?” Or you might be thinking, “I don’t have a Switch 2 yet – can I play them on the Switch 1?” Of course, you’re also likely thinking, “How much will they cost?” Well, fear not, because this guide should help you along.
As the trailer that was revealed at the recent Nintendo Direct states, you don’t have to buy both games. Each game will be available individually on Nintendo’s eShop. However, if you prefer your media physical, you will have to purchase the compilation of both games – the games will only be available individually in digital format.
According to Nintendo’s official site, you can play them on both the Switch 1 and Switch 2. If you haven’t yet secured a Switch 2 or you’re still saving up your money for a Switch 2 (or you’re boycotting it because of the high prices), you can still play the games on your original Switch, and it doesn’t seem like the games will be identical on both consoles.
The bundle of both games will cost $69.99. It’s quite a price increase from Super Mario 3D All-Stars, which cost $59.99 and included three games instead of two, but everything is more expensive these days. If you want to buy them individually, they will cost $39.99 each.
The release date is October 2, 2025, which is only a few weeks from now. Soon, a whole new generation can experience the wonder of the Super Mario Galaxy games. The new releases will feature both motion and button controls, an assist mode that gives you more health, and new chapters of Rosalina’s storybook (which is now featured in both games). This is a great way to keep the games alive. If you sold your Wii, you don’t feel like digging it up, or you just never owned a Wii, you can now experience the Super Mario Galaxy games anew.
