Super Mario Sunshine on Nintendo Switch Online Means Good News for Wind Waker HD

When the Nintendo Switch 2 launches on June 5, GameCube games will be added to the Nintendo Switch Online service exclusively on the Switch 2. Three games will be available at launch: F-Zero GX, Soulcalibur 2, and the original version of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Meanwhile, Super Mario Sunshine is on the list of games Nintendo plans to release in the future. Fans have clamored to have GameCube games on Nintendo Switch Online for a long time, so this is sure to further entice people to buy the Switch 2.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars

Super Mario Sunshine was previously released on the Switch 1 as part of the limited-edition collection Super Mario 3D All-Stars. With the Switch’s backwards compatibility, gamers who own that collection will be able to play Super Mario Sunshine as either part of that collection or on Nintendo Switch Online. This has made some gamers suspect that a rerelease of the HD remaster of Wind Waker could be on the horizon.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD

In 2013, an HD remaster of Wind Waker was released on the Wii U, which was a financially disappointing console. Since many people didn’t own a Wii U, they wished for a rerelease of the HD remaster for the Switch 1, which never happened. The version of Wind Waker on Nintendo Switch Online will be the original version, not the remaster.

However, since fans will have two different ways to play Super Mario Sunshine on the Switch 2, this could mean that we’ll get a rerelease of the HD Wind Waker. You can already play two versions of Link’s Awakening on the Switch – the Game Boy Color version on Nintendo Switch Online and the 2019 remake – so perhaps Nintendo will do something similar with Wind Waker.
