Super People, for anyone who missed it, was a Battle Royal game developed by Wonder People that shuttered its doors for good in 2023. Or, at least, we thought that it had. Instead, W0nder People has shocked the world by announcing the game’s return like a phoenix rising from the ashes. In June, there will be a closed beta test available for the game that many compare to PUBG. Unlike PUBG, characters used superheroes, and also unlike PUBG, Super People was not popular enough to stay in the highly competitive Battle Royale space. Perhaps this time will be different.
Super People, the battle royale coop shooter released for PC, started off strong. Originally unveiled in 2021, it immediately caught on with gameplay that appeared similar, but more marketable than Apex Legends, which encouraged players to dive head-on into the fray. In 2022, a closed beta test was announced and immediately gained popularity and hype. That success soon waned, though. Early access was available in October, but the team rebranded the game to Super People 2 for reasons still unknown just two months later. As the shine wore off, the game eventually ended in August of 2023.
On May 2 of 2025, the game suddenly had a new open Steam page that announced the team from Wonder People studios was attempting to stage a comeback for Super People. The page describes the game as, “WONDER PEOPLE proudly presents a battle royale shooter that will revolutionize how you think about the genre. In SUPER PEOPLE, take control of a super-soldier, each with their own unique skills, and survive until you are the last one standing.”
The about the game section continues to highlight that the game is pretty clearly the same concept as before.
Battle Royale on another level. Enjoy faster and more intense battles with SUPER PEOPLE.
This game is a new form of a Battle Royale Shooter.
SUPER PEOPLE is a Battle Royale Shooter where you play as one of the Super Soldiers with various skills and compete to become the last man or last trio standing.
Make your character stronger in various ways as the game progresses. Class-specific skills and ultimates can be learned and used as your character levels up.
Experience the thrill and excitement of turning the tide in an instant with faster means to acquire ultimates. The ever-so-different gameplay for each round adds another flavor to its unique experience one cannot get from playing other Battle Royale shooters.
Engagements can occur at any time, anywhere, so the process of planning a route to get the best equipment can be seen as a strategy and a fun element.
Despite the appearance, though, the team stands strongly on the statement that the game is not just a rehash of a failed co-op shooter. Creator Hur Min said, Super People “is not just a restoration. Our promise is to confront the moments when we were at our best and to bring the excitement and emotion of those memories back to life.”
According to PC Gamer, “In a subsequent update, Min touched on Wonder People’s priorities for the resurrected Super People, including efforts against cheaters, achieving better character and weapon balance, improving the sense of progression (and avoiding the frustration of sudden loss), and making the game more accessible to newcomers.”
Given the game clearly needs a shake-up if it is to survive longer than it did in the past, in a space that is utterly dominated by the big names like Call of Duty, Fortnite, Apex Legends, and PUBG, among others, they really need to learn from their mistakes. It appears that is their focus, but hopefully, they get beyond the concept and actually pull off the changes.
Super People is making a comeback, whether we like it or not. Gamers know that the original concept had some life; people were intrigued by the gameplay mechanics and had hype at first. Gamers also know that once the novelty wore off, there was not much of a success story. Hopefully, the second time is the charm, and fans will have the opportunity to see for themselves.
The first Super People closed beta test will begin at 3 pm PT/6 pm ET on June 18 and will run until June 26. Any gamer who wants a chance to join can do so by going to the official Steam page and requesting consideration to sign up. Not everyone will get it, but it is the first chance to see the co-op shooter suck in new breaths of life.
