Video games can wear a lot of hats at once, and it is no different for the new indie game, Survival Machine. The upcoming release is already in early access, so players can have a taste before the official launch. The entry by Grapes Pickers studio melds co-op gameplay, building simulator, and zombie fighting action together for a special spin. Players can jump in solo or gather their friends to work together, hoping to survive the night as zombies take over.
In Survival Machine, players are tasked with building a base on a moving platform, that travels in between different locations to gather much needed resources. The art style has a bit of a mobile game and Roblox mixed aesthetic, which means to say it is basic, but gets the job done. At day, it is about gathering resources and building up your base, taking on a few monsters in the process. At night, the world becomes infested with zombies, and the players only goal? Survive.
The Steam page for Survival Machine gives this description for gameplay. “Build your base on a moving Machine, travel through biomes with different resources, and prepare for the night when a zombie threat is much higher than during the day. Would you go solo or explore this new world with your best friends?” Fans have had mixed reviews so far, but keep in mind, the game is not yet complete. Early access is an opportunity for developers to work and make tweeks based on player feedback, which is the exact goal here as well.
According to the developers, “We deeply care about our community’s opinion on our games and want to include their opinion and expectations in the development. Survival Machine was announced at the beginning of its development and we want to see how our community enjoys the experience we provide in the Early Access version to properly develop it further on the basis of their feedback. Early Access will give us the right amount of freedom to experiment with some new solutions while gathering rapid feedback from our community.”
The team for Survival Machine has also given fans a bit more to look into regarding the overall gameplay mechanics as well:
Survival Machine is a 4 player co-op, 3rd person, survival-adventure game set in vibrant, diverse landscapes. Navigate the ever-changing world aboard the colossal Machine that doubles as your fortress, homestead, and transport. Whether braving the game solo or with friends, explore biomes full of random challenges to gather resources, craft new upgrades, and build structures that will help you survive.
EMBARK ON THE ADVENTUROUS JOURNEY
Follow your pathway through the colorful lands full of engaging challenges, and varied mysteries to uncover. Precious rewards are lurking for you in every corner. The more you search, the more you encounter platforming challenges, combat arenas, and hidden secrets.
It appears the game has a lot to intrigue players with. Enjoy simulation games? Resource gathering will be perfect for you. Enjoy city builders? Well, your moving fortress is a perfect opportunity to build. Feel like getting friends together for a night of survival and good old fashioned zombie hunting? The game has something for you as well. Indie games have done a great job of mixing multiple genres into one digestable package, and Survival Machine appears to follow in those footsteps.
Now, if I were asked whether this game is a phenomenal entry that deserves game of the year consideration, my answer would be unequivocally no. That said, it is a fun little zombie simulation game that you can play with your friends and escape reality for a little while. That is all it is meant to be, and it accomplishes that. The game is available on PC for early access, and players can buy the version and hope it to try it out. The full version is expected to be out about a year into the early access release, and hopefully fans can share feedback so that the final product meets expectations.
