Tekken 8 Director Apologizes For Rough Start To Season 2

Tekken 8’s second season has been met with critical outrage. Despite the game being fairly well received at launch, the balance changes introduced along with the new DLC character, Anna Williams, have been widely criticized. Season two failed when its intention to make the game more defensively oriented failed, and made the game, which was already built to feature offensive play, shift to an even more aggressive and offensive game. Since the launch of Season 2, the game’s Steam page has been bombarded with negative reviews, resulting in an “Overwhelmingly Negative” rating being displayed on the game’s Steam Store page.

Tekken 8: Problems with the Initial Season 2 Patch

While Tekken 8 has begun to take steps in the direction of fixing many of these mistakes, it must be noted just how bad the initial Season 2 patch was. The balance adjustments made across the entire roster threw some characters’ offensive pressure into absurdity. Anna Williams, the game’s newest fighter, was also one of the patch’s biggest offenders. Anna brings an actual rocket launcher to fights, which has many wall splatting attacks that have since been nerfed. Online servers were flooded with players spamming buffed characters like JACK and Reika. Many people believed this was one of the worst patches in FGC history, and players were quitting the game.

The Apology and First Season 2 Emergency Patch

Following two weeks of severe backlash from the community, Tekken 8 developers dropped the  2.00.02 patch on April 16. The patch has had a mild but positive reception from players. The consensus is that the emergency update hasn’t fixed the game it is an improvement. Some of the changes include a global increase to health as well as nerfs to heat-based damage. This has helped Tekken get back on its feet in terms of its overly aggressive gameplay.

Tekken 8 game director Kohei Ikeda posted a message to fans on X following the release of the patch, saying, “I would like to offer my heartfelt apologies as the Game Director for the fact that the recently released Season 2 did not meet your expectations and caused inconvenience due to critical issues. We take all of your feedback and comments very seriously. The entire team is working together with full commitment to resolve these problems and deliver a better gameplay experience.”

Plans to Rework and Revive Tekken 8

While the recent patch has been viewed as a step in the right direction, it is far from perfect. Glitches within the patch have been discovered. The development team announced that there would be another emergency patch on Tuesday and tweeted about the following glitch: “We have confirmed the following issue in Tekken 8: During matches between Eddy and Nina, Eddy may move in front of his opponent immediately after the start of the match.”

So that means we can count on a quick patch coming this week, the third change in April, for the record. Then, after all that, a bigger rework is also scheduled for May. This kind of turbulence already creates a situation that is less than ideal for players. The bright side is that developers are receptive to feedback, and hopefully, they can get it right in due time.
