Video game memes and the Olympics probably don't swim together in your mind often, as the only thing the global sports celebration usually has in common with games is when Mario and Sonic turn up. 2024 is a bit different, though, as a small handful of events captured the imaginations of game-loving internet dwellers and inspired some pretty creative spins on the shooting competition in particular.
Unsurprisingly, most of the memes are about Yusuf Dikec, the Turkish pistol shooter who showed up in a T-shirt with one hand in his pocket and casually helped Turkey win its first Olympic medal in shooting. What made Dikec stand out aside from his laid-back approach to a high-stakes sport was how much of a contrast he was to Kim Ye-ji, one of the Republic of Korea’s contestants who wore special glasses and looked just plain cool with their backward baseball cap.
Then there was Choe Daehan, also representing the Republic of Korea, wearing a suit and taking a stance that folks wasted no time likening to an anime character’s behavior.
Anyway, the internet loves them now and, naturally, started turning them into memes as soon as possible. We've rounded up some of the best Olympics video game memes we've seen so far below.

Twitter user airbagged reposted a shot of Choe Daehan and said they’re convinced Death Stranding creator Hideo Kojima was directing the event, and vigwingly jokingly said Kojima is already “five paragraphs deep” in Kim Ye-ji’s DMs. I say jokingly, but Kim does look like the kind of person Kojima would love to build some kind of eccentric story around. Too late for Death Stranding 2, probably, but hey, who knows.

Myu060309, a self-described illustrator, created this fantastic poster for a fictitious “Paris Olympic Shooting” animated movie. No, that’s not technically a video game, but it is very cool.

Geo_AW put Ben Beckmann’s coat on Dikec – that’s a One Piece reference – and Reddit user Little-Purpose269 did exceptional work by putting Persona 5’s gun UI around Dikec.
Easily one of my favorites is this animated sequence made to look like a Tekken 8 cutscene from BuffGigas on Twitter, where a dual-wielding Kim Ye-Ji takes on a Tekken-ized version of Dikec that looks about twice his real-life size.

And another is this set of Disco Elysium-inspired illustrations from Luiisiki, who did a bit of storytelling with their posts. Harry Dubois is Dikec, fighting intrusive thoughts and, hopefully, winning, and Kim Kitsuragi as Kim Ye-ji, passing a skill check with flying colors, as you’d expect from the sergeant if you've played it. And you should, since it's one of the best RPGs out there.

One I’m surprised there weren’t more variations on was Bloodborne. Twitter user Vixit_art gave Kim Ye-Ji some Yharnam glasses and stylish headgear and put them opposite a Dikec in fairly casual garb by Bloodborne standards. There’s even a Freaky Little Thing in the middle, holding the Olympic torch.

The FFXIV community also surprised me by not turning anyone into a Machinist – or if they did, Twitter’s cooked algorithms didn’t show me – so I made a little effort myself. The default, unmodded character creator even has a hairstyle remarkably similar to Dikec’s, if you overlook the Miqo'te cat ears. And that massive Machinist gun.

That all came from just the span of a few days. The 2024 Olympics run through Aug. 11, 2024, so here’s hoping we end up with plenty more memeable moments before then.

Acuña Return Imminent, Braves Deliver More Bad Riley News
Ronald Acuña Jr. is closing in on his return to the Atlanta Braves lineup. Manager Brian Snitker siad via MLB.com's Mark Bowman that the All-Star outfielder is expected to be activated in the next couple of days. However, all news wasn't on the positive side for the team. Third baseman Austin Riley still felt discomfort when he was throwing on Tuesday. It's unlikley he'll be activated this week. The bright side of the Riley update is that it's more a when he will return instead of an if. Acuña has been out with a grade 1 calf strain since the last week of July. It initially looked like it might be an achillies injury, but further evaluation of the ailment revealed a better-case scenario. He's looked like he's been at least pain free for the most part for some time. He's been seen before games taking at-bats and field balls in the field. Last week, we was also seen doing running drills. The Braves have been wise to work him back slowly as he works different parts of his game. Even with the playoff picture long gone, it's always good to get a key bat back in the lineup and have him healthy into the offseason. Acuña can have normal workouts and be ready to participate in Spring Training this time around. In 55 games, Acuña is batting .306 with a 1.005 OPS, a 2.6 WAR, a 180 OPS+, 14 home runs and 26 RBIs. Riley is still dealing with the adomen injury that has gotten him placed on the injured list twice this season. Shortly after his return, he re-aggravated the injury on a diving play during the MLB Speedway Classic. Both times when hr hurt his abs, it came on a play in the infield. What should have been celebrated as one of the highlights of the game just added more frustration to this season. They're going to have to patient and wait to see if the pain lessons as he works out. Like Acuña, it's good to get him back before the end of the season regardless of how it's going. In Riley's case, it would be great simply because he didn't return after his injury last season. That being said, because of how this season is going, the Braves can take their time and make sure Riley is good to go as opposed to rushing him back out there. Denver Broncos Quarterback Bo Nix Addresses Shaky Performance
Ahead of the NFL season, Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix has emphasized stepping up as a leader. The former Oregon Ducks quarterback led his team to the NFL postseason as a rookie and is looking to make a further push in year two. Nix and wide receiver Courtland Sutton sat down with Adams on the Up Adams show, and the second-year quarterback was not pleased with how practice went. “I like the narrative that we had a good practice, but I wasn’t necessarily too excited with it today,” Nix said. “I felt like, starting from me, I felt like the energy could have been better today. But, you know, I just got to do my job better. And, you know, until it’s perfect, it’s not done well enough.” Nix recently made the NFL Top 100 Players of 2025, and he shared a similar viewpoint. The former Ducks quarterback was ranked No. 64, and while that is an honor to be voted so highly by fellow NFL players, Nix felt like it was not good enough, and there are goals to still achieve. Preparing For Year Two One of the top aspects of the 2025 NFL season is that Nix and the Broncos will have many returning players on the offense. While there are new additions, having Sutton and the returning offensive line adds continuity. Nix is excited for the direction that the team is heading. “We’re excited to be able to learn and grow together. You know we got a good football team, but we don’t want to just be talk,” Nix added. “We’re gonna hear that enough. We want to go out there and actually be a good football team. So, it doesn’t happen by accident.” The Denver Broncos finished the 2024 season with a 10-7 record, thanks to an impressive final 10 games of the season. Of the final 10 games, the team won six, and Nix threw 24 touchdowns. This caused the Broncos to earn a playoff spot in Nix’s rookie season. While Nix may be having up-and-down practices, he proved he can turn things around, and the former Ducks quarterback can do it again in year two. Sean Payton Emphasizes Nix’s Leadership Nix taking accountability should come as no surprise. Earlier in training camp, Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton emphasized that his quarterback is showing his leadership growth this year. “The leadership skillset, I think, comes at that position, and he’s comfortable with that. And when you're a young player, it’s just about proving yourself,” Payton told NFL Network’s Cynthia Frelund and Patrick Claybon. “When you prove that you can play, they latch onto that, and I think it happened for him last year.” Nix is aware of the mistakes he is making and is working to hone his skills ahead of the season. The Broncos have two preseason games remaining where Nix could have the chance to turn things around and shake off the rust ahead of the season. The Broncos will first face the Arizona Cardinals (Aug. 16) then the New Orleans Saints (Aug. 23). Five Raiders Players Making a Big Push to Make Pete Carroll's 53-Man Roster
HENDERSON, Nev.—The Las Vegas Raiders will host the San Francisco 49ers tomorrow for a joint practice and will face them again on Saturday at Allegiant Stadium for their second preseason game. While Raider Nation's focus is on the 49ers, there are five players fiercely competing for a spot on Pete Carroll's initial 53-man roster. Their competition was evident in today's practice. From my vantage point on the sideline, here are five players who are striving to secure a place on the Silver and Black roster. Greedy is Good Greedy Vance, the undrafted free agent from USC, has had an outstanding training camp. Originally, I believed he would end up on the practice squad, but as of Monday, I projected him to make the roster. He is currently competing with Kyu Blu Kelly, but Vance has shown remarkable resilience. His ability to maintain a short memory—essential for a defensive back—coupled with his fearless nature, has helped him stand out. In his roles on offense and special teams, he cannot afford to have a bad day, and so far, he hasn't. The big question for him is how he will manage the intense pressure of football as the team approaches the August 27 NFL cut-down day. Don’t be (Kyu) Blue Kyu Blu Kelly, hailing from Las Vegas and a former Stanford Cardinal, has had an impressive training camp. Over the past two days, he has performed exceptionally well, earning first-team reps both times. The pressure of the moment hasn't fazed him, and he has truly excelled. He is currently competing with Greedy Vance, whom I had previously projected to make the 53-man roster. This competition is very close, but after Kelly's strong performances over the last two days, I believe he is slightly ahead of Vance. The upcoming game against the 49ers could be crucial for Kelly's NFL future. The Name is Bachman, Alex Bachman The Webster Dictionary definition of an underdog includes a reference to Alex Bachman. After attending multiple training camps, this young athlete, who has a passion for football, continues to pursue his dream. He has been fully committed and has had an impressive camp, making plays on both offense and special teams. Bachman has taken full advantage of his opportunities with the first, second, and third teams, excelling in every role assigned to him. Currently, he is in a tough competition. Initially, I didn’t anticipate him making the 53-man roster, but after my mid-camp assessment on Monday, I’ve changed my mind. The competition is exceptionally close, and as he strives to secure a spot on the roster for the first time, he cannot afford any missteps—one bad play could cost him his chance. His competitors are improving every day, and the race for the fifth wide receiver position is as intense as any on the team. The Eyes of Texas Are Upon You, Collin Collin Johnson, the Texas Longhorns player, has had two remarkable days in a row. Today, he capitalized on his first-team reps, showcasing his agility, versatility, and impressive football intelligence. With his notable size and good speed, he presents more opportunities than Bachman, and he doesn’t seem overwhelmed by the stage. His performance over the last two practices has narrowed the gap between him and Bachman, and he deserves more primary reps. Johnson’s skill set stands out, even though Bachman consistently makes plays. This is largely due to Johnson's physical attributes. He learns quickly, and while his skills are impressive, his intelligence on the field is his greatest asset. At 6’5” and 220 pounds—5 inches taller and 30 pounds heavier than Bachman—he can use his size to create separation without drawing the dreaded pass interference penalty. While Bachman may be faster, every time Johnson excels in crucial situations, he demonstrates the unique tactical advantages he can offer. So You’re Saying There's a Chance Tommy Mellott, the pride of Butte, Montana, faces a daunting challenge. The FCS star quarterback is being asked to transition from FCS to the NFL while also changing positions. The task is significant, but let’s not portray him as a victim. Mellott has both talent and heart, and I believe he may not even realize how good he truly is at this point. The Raiders see the potential for him to become a Julian Edelman-type player, as he displays a unique combination of physicality and intelligence that is reminiscent of a Hogwarts wizard. Now, here’s the question: if we are looking strictly at 2025, Mellott is unlikely to beat out Alex Bachman or Collin Johnson. However, on a team that isn't expected to contend for the Super Bowl in 2025 and already has four solid wide receivers on the roster, can John Spytek afford to keep Mellott as a luxury piece on special teams and at wide receiver to allow him to develop? If the Raiders were to try placing him on the practice squad, there’s no guarantee that another team wouldn’t sign him to their 53-man roster. So what should Spytek do? Should he take the risk of losing a player with great potential by placing him on the practice squad, or should he choose a more cautious approach? Las Vegas is known for its gamblers. A strong finish for Mellott could simplify this decision, but if he doesn’t perform well, he could create headaches for the Raiders' leadership.
