The First Berserker: Khazan is a soulslike genre game that was first released earlier in 2025, and the developers are set to drop a free DLC update to all users. The soulslike genre is already known for its brutally challenging action combat; it is really the defining feature of the category.  Therefore, a challenge is to be expected. When a developer of this genre comes out and says the task is so hard that even they may not play it, well, in this case, the difficulty level is likely brutal. That is the case with the upcoming DLC, and it will be interesting to see how fans react.

The First Berserker: Khazan Free Update Boss Rushes The Thing Of Nightmares

The First Berserker: Khazan has earned rave reviews since its release. The developers have been known to throw high difficulty tasks at the players; in fact, it is what gained the game the notoriety it has received. The dark fantasy has thrown incredibly challenging bosses at users since day one, but what made the game so good is that the challenges had payoffs at the end. It was not difficult just for difficult’s sake: the reward was worth the battle. The impressive depth of the game as a whole engages players throughout, and really makes you feel like you have earned the storyline progression.

That is why, when one of the lead developers of  The First Berserker: Khazan says that the challenge in the new boss rush modes coming to the upcoming DLC is too much even for him, ears tend to perk up. “Khazan is a mission-oriented game,” Junho Lee explained.

“You can always go back and fight the bosses that you defeated again, and you’ll still earn rewards. Want a tougher challenge? Unequip your gear or limit your skills to raise the difficulty as much as you’d like. But for this new content, we wanted to create a special challenge—something different from the usual approach. We had a storm of ideas. Harder. Nastier. More punishing. The kind of challenge that not just anyone could take on.”

Lee was not done, though. Despite Lee admitting he plays at least 4 hours of games per day, and is a platinum trophy owner on almost all action games, he had quite an interesting take on the upcoming The First Berserker DLC. According to him, he “probably wouldn’t play” the new boss rushes. In other words, it is beyond the pale of enjoyable difficulty, even for him. For someone who is clearly an expert in the Soulslike space, that is quite an admission, and ought to give fans a picture of exactly how hard the DLC will actually be.

The two brutal new boss rush challenges will become available once players complete the game once. However, those are not the only additions coming with the new DLC. As Games Radar describes, “The First Berserker’s forthcoming update lets you change your appearance during your first playthrough, but the real big change comes via two new boss rush modes that appear in the menu after you beat the game once. There’s the Great General’s Crucible mode, which groups together bosses ‘thematically’ in sort-of playlists, and equips you with ‘designated specs.’ Then there’s the Berserker’s Bloodshed mode, which dishes out rewards after consecutive fights until you defeat a final boss.”

Not all players will enjoy The First Berserker: Khazan update, and that is by design. It is tailored to those players who are gluttons for punishment. For any fan who wants to try the hardest of the hardest in the soulslike genre, the base game is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC, and the free DLC will launch on May 15.
