Members of Critical Role have been teasing a video game for some time now. And now, it’s starting to become a reality! They’ve chosen to partner with AdHoc Studio to bring the game to life. And, with a team-up like this, how can they fail to make something fantastic?

Critical Role x AdHoc Studio

It’s not surprising that Critical Role would choose an indie studio like AdHoc to develop a game based on the world of Exandria. When you think of these tabletop gamers, you don’t think of big, flashy companies. AdHoc Studio is currently working on the game, “Dispatch”, which is planned to lead into an animated series, merch, and its own tabletop game. Critical Role members Travis Willingham, Matthew Mercer, and Laura Bailey are included in the voice cast of that game. So they’re already familiar with the developer.

Variety reported that Willingham was impressed by a demo of “Dispatch” and the game’s animation style. He said, “I absolutely flipped out. The animation was so amazing. So much so, it looked like an animated show.” He reached out to the COO of AdHoc Studio, Nick Herman, about creating a similarly styled game for Critical Role.

Things are still in early stages, so there’s nothing concrete, but they’d like the game to have narrative gameplay with player choices that are similar to “Dispatch”. Based on that, we can expect that this new game won’t be like existing games based on Dungeons and Dragons. They’ll most likely include some fan-favorite characters while creating a new storyline that hasn’t been experienced before. A character-driven game seems fitting coming from the folks who created and breathed life into such memorable characters.

Who Are They?

Critical Role is comprised of founders and cast members, Matthew Mercer, Ashley Johnson, Marisha Ray, Taliesin Jaffe, Travis Willingham, Sam Riegel, Laura Bailey, and Liam O’Brien. Episodes of their TTRPG games can be found on YouTube going back 7 years! The animated series, “The Legend of Vox Machina,” has three seasons available on Amazon Prime Video, and a fourth season has been ordered. They’re also developing a series based on their Mighty Nein campaign.

But When Can We Play It?

We can’t wait to get our hands on the game that will be created from such a talented partnership. But, this early in the process, it’s impossible to say for certain when it will be released. Still, Willingham has suggested that they want the game to be successful, so it has to be big but not as costly as a AAA title would be. And, they want it done within a couple of years. Stay tuned! We’ll keep you informed.
