The Midnight Walk is an indie horror game animated in claymation. Playable with both regular flatscreens and VR headsets, you befriend a strange lantern creature and protect him from various creatures out to extinguish him. It features a weird, visually stunning world to explore.

The Midnight Walk and Its Features

The official Steam page describes the game as a “reverent dark fantasy adventure built in clay.” You “befriend a lost lantern creature named Potboy,” and you must protect him from “the many monsters eager to devour your little friend’s flame.” You and Potboy can work together and use his flame to outsmart enemies, and the game is playable in both flat-screen and VR mode.

The game’s trailer demonstrates a dark, creepy world inhabited by various creatures with exaggerated features. The character designs feel reminiscent of Tim Burton’s characters, specifically those in The Nightmare Before Christmas. Exploring this world in VR will undoubtedly be a unique experience to both charm you and put you on edge, but it looks like the game will have plenty to offer even if you don’t have a VR headset. The Steam page has this to say about the visuals:

“Everything you see in The Midnight Walk, from the drooling snarl of monsters to the bristling tree tops that line the journey, was first sculpted in clay and then 3D scanned to a meticulous level of detail. The result is a uniquely layered fantasy world with an artistic imprint, all realized in breathtaking stop motion.”

Atmosphere Over Gameplay?

Indie horror games are full of variety, and this particular game looks to be about the mood. Neither the Steam page nor the trailer advertises a lot in terms of gameplay, so there likely aren’t a lot of gameplay innovations. However, sometimes a game doesn’t need fancy gimmicks to be a worthwhile experience. Sometimes a game can be about exploring a unique world and allowing yourself to get lost in the atmosphere. The Midnight Walk looks to be a game that embraces the overall experience, letting players savor the rich visuals, and that might be all the game needs to be.
