With the release of Sonic Racing: Crossworlds soon coming, a lot of attention to Sonic’s colorful cast of characters has been brought to stage once more. Many years focused solely on the blue hedgehog in his adventures, it often makes a lot of the extended cast feel a bit–incidental in the grand scheme.
It has been attempted to make Sonic titles focused on the other cast members: Shadow the Hedgehog being a key one who just released his new title the year prior with 2024’s Shadow Generations, a side game as part of a re-released Sonic Generations.
It would become a major hit, as a large part of the year was dedicated to the brave hearted hero. Being a key character in the 3rd installment of the Sonic the Hedgehog films at Paramount–voiced by Keanu Reeves even! Though this would not be his first foray into his own solo adventure, with the release if Shadow the Hedgehog many years ago.
Besides Shadow, Tails would feature in two 8-bit titles Tails’ Adventure and Tails’ Sky Patrol: both SEGA Game Gear titles that have been re-released and are playable in Sonic Origins Plus. While Knuckles would feature in the SEGA 32x title Knuckles’ Chaotix which has since not seen a major re-release since it’s debut in April 21, 1995. Dr. Eggman would also be the star of a puzzle title, Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine which was a localized reskin of Puyo Puyo–so for those looking for more puzzle action with blobs it is highly recommended to pick that series up for more!
Though who else could take up the mantle for their own story? Well there have been many key characters who have appeared on the side in past games, their stories could be explored further when given the chance to go in-depth! So here are three characters in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise that could perhaps take up the mantle like Shadow has done as of recent.
This lovely pink hedgehog has been part of the franchise since the start, starring in Sonic CD, she became a love interest for Sonic over the years. Remaining a prominent cast member and a mainstay in new releases. With the power of her hammer and love for others, she could make for a very unique experience that could try to cater to the female fanbase.
Though not the most exciting character herself, she is the last of the primary cast to have never received her own game. She did essentially star in The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog, being as it was a game focused around her birthday party, you were seen playing as brand new character Barry the Quokka as you explored the train with Tails to uncover clues on who “murdered” Sonic.
The idea behind an Amy Rose focused title could be more slow and methodical, still focused around the platforming but putting a lot of emphasis on her hammer to deal with enemies in new ways. Collecting new equipment and earning experience points not unlike an RPG, though this particular idea takes heavy inspiration from the Devil May Cry series interestingly enough–she could have what it takes to prove herself a worthy spot in the franchise.
Introduced in Sonic Rush, Blaze has been an awfully confusing character in her series. Either posed as a princess of a royal kingdom from another dimension, or a future mentor to a time traveling hedgehog. This would focus on her appearance as royalty, giving the series a parallel look into the Sonic universe.
Taking place in her home dimension, many new things can happen while standing on its own, featuring brand new characters both good and bad for Blaze to become acquainted with–even the return of Marine the Raccoon who has not seen any notable appearance in the series since her debut in Sonic Rush Adventure on the Nintendo DS.
Blaze would play very similar to the blue blur, given that was how she was often portrayed in her appearances previously. She would feature characters who could be a fun spin on existing ones, such as her world’s take on a Knuckles or perhaps a Deadly Six. It would be a good way to make a brand new Sonic game, while not needing to be too tied down to the mythos of the pre-existing cast and storylines.
To perhaps be given his true second chance, Silver is a missed opportunity with a lot of potential concept that SEGA really could do to explore more of. Giving Silver a chance to perhaps become as beloved as the blue-and-black the world adores. Taking place in his time, it could be very similar to the concept of a Blaze game in giving the team a chance to try something new while this time actively expanding on the existing lore.
Silver being over a hundred years ahead of Sonic and friends, seeing how their legacies live on in the future would be rather exciting. Perhaps we could see the lineages of our beloved characters be continued with newborns that appear familiar to long-time fans. What could Sonic’s son look like? Would the Echidna live on, or would it simply go extinct with Knuckles? Who would Silver be facing if even the Eggman Empire is no more?
Like with Blaze as well, a title centered around Silver would also allow us to see these characters in their original setting. Without the need to shove them into new Sonic titles to just exist and be inconsequential additions. It would truly show us how massive the universe can be without retreading old ideas.
Since the Open Network Test for Sonic Racing: Crossworlds is set to release tomorrow on August 29th, 2025, players will get a chance to race against others online in this exciting new entry in Sonic’s racing series. The many tracks to race on giving us a wide view of how far the series has come both on-and-off the track, going far and beyond even Sonic Generations in representing the overall history of our favorite speed demon.
While it is unknown if we will see the team take on Sonic titles akin to Shadow Generations, it could be something fun to look forward to. With the fourth installment of the Sonic films, and even potential spinoffs by Paramount to expect, maybe it could convince SEGA to do more fun and exciting things–pushing new boundaries, and even frontiers to giving us fresh takes on their mascot series.
