Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow is the next entry in the long and legendary Thief stealth gaming franchise, first released back in 1998. The game was first announced in PlayStation’s State of Play livestream on June 4. Legacy of Shadow takes the iconic series in a bold new direction, allowing players to experience the story in a reimagined virtual reality. Players will be asked to “steal, evade, and outsmart” the enemies patrolling the setting, all while controlling protagonist Magpie through unique VR controls and mechanics.
Thief has been a franchise that first premiered in 1998, and has been one of the pinnacles of the stealth action genre ever since. Never before has the game been adapted for virtual reality, though. Insert Thief VR: Legacy of Shadows. Vertigo Games has adapted the legendary series for VR, and it allows players to truly become part of the game like never before. They can feel the story, instead of just following it. The goal is to become a Master Thief, as you discover a mysterious artifact while turning up secrets and avoiding the darkest enemies in The City.
Vertigo Games dives into what to expect from Thief VR in a blog post that came after the livestream announcement.
The City is a place of shadows, ruled by the tyrant Baron Ulysses Northcrest. You are Magpie, a cunning thief orphaned by Northcrest’s brutality and shaped by the streets, who steals as the only means to survive. That is, until you uncover something greater: a legendary artifact holding a legacy from the past. Use immersive VR mechanics to steal, evade, and outsmart the forces controlling The City. Unravel its darkest secrets and expose a sinister conspiracy that looms over its very foundation.
With PlayStation VR2’s cutting-edge technology, Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow delivers a fully immersive stealth experience. Physically crouch, hide, and move between shadows, using every inch of the environment to stay undetected.
Whether you’re sneaking through darkened alleys or scaling the rooftops of towering buildings, your every movement feels real. Extinguish light sources with your water arrows, hands, or even a well-aimed breath to deepen the darkness and expand your cover. The VR mechanics allow you to live out the fantasy of stealth in a way that no other medium can replicate.
The developers also highlight three features that will make the game fit the iconic Thief franchise.
