Resident Evil Requiem’s release is just around the corner, and if you’ve ever played a Resident Evil game, you would know that they are usually played in third-person mode, except for RE7 and RE8, which are played specifically in first-person mode, and introduce new characters and a new storyline. Fitting, given that we play as a new character in the series. However, Resident Evil Requiem will be played in both first-person and third-person modes, and we can thank RE7 for this. Here’s what the Director of Resident Evil Requiem has to say about this.
According to the director of Resident Evil Requiem, Resident Evil 7 gained a lot of notoriety for its high level of horror, mostly in part because of the first-person perspective players were forced to endure. It’s definitely the series’ scariest game yet. Requiem says that because RE7 was so scary, they’ve brought back third-person mode to balance the horror aspect of the game. Director Koshi Nakanishi says,
“Looking back at Resident Evil 7’s first person perspective, I implemented that as a way to make it more immersive and more scary than ever before,” he said. “Which I think most, you know, media and players agreed it was an incredibly scary game, but it was possibly too scary.”
He also says that adding third-person mode is a way to break away from the immersion of first-person, which ups the spookiness of the game in itself. I am actually really excited to play the dual perspectives. It’s unique for a Resident Evil game, and it brings the nostalgia of playing these games as they were originally made. I still think Requiem will even top RE7’s horror by a landslide; however, I like the idea of a balanced gameplay while still feeling immersed within the game.
What does this mean for us? Well, the game won’t be as high-octane as RE7. Adding third-person mode will relieve pressure should players feel too immersed or intense while playing. Switching between perspectives will also feel like a dynamic experience, from hearing Grace’s shaky breaths in first-person to getting some distance between us and the monsters roaming about.
What can we expect from this? We can expect an immersive experience that focuses on addictive horror rather than your usual jump scares. It adds levity to an otherwise scary game by letting players breathe if it gets way too intense. Resident Evil Requiem is set to release on February 27 of next year on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. I am looking forward to this highly anticipated installment, and you best bet I am playing mostly in first-person mode!
