Worship is a sim game, but not one where you can build your own theme park or grow your own farm. No, this is a game where you run your own cult and fill it with mindless followers who will commit horrific acts in your name. Your ultimate goal is to end the world with the help of your chosen god. Also, it’s inspired by Nintendo’s cute, colorful Pikmin franchise.
The game’s gameplay overview trailer gave a rundown of how you must gather followers, perform rituals fueled by your own blood, and defeat enemies of the cult. Your cult members follow you around and perform tasks for you in a similar way to how the Pikmin follow Olimar around in Nintendo’s Pikmin franchise. The Early Access trailer, which debuted at Summer Game Fest, shows a baby being sacrificed, but the cult members fail to spread its blood in the shape of a pentagram, which demonstrates that the game will have a sense of humor. The game uses a black-and-white visual style that’s touched with the red of blood.
The game’s Steam page advertises that, “Armageddon is more fun with friends.” You can play with up to three people online in co-op mode, which is advertised as “guaranteed chaos.” If you’re tired of challenging your friends to Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros., perhaps they’d like to don cult robes instead. After all, the Steam page says, “building a cult brings people together,” and many people can’t get a Switch 2 to play Mario Kart World yet.
Some might think that the cute cult simulator itch has already been scratched with Cult of the Lamb. However, if you’ve ever played the Pikmin games and thought, “these games would be better if I were an evil cultist,” then give Worship a try. Even if you haven’t had that specific thought, Worship looks like a fun, evil time that is sure to satisfy fans of both Cult of the Lamb and Pikmin. You can download a free demo on Steam now, and the game goes into Early Access on July 16.
