2-Time Champ Joins Caitlin Clark in Making WNBA History

The 2025 WNBA season is heating up, and the Phoenix Mercury are right in the mix with an impressive 12-5 start. Amid MVP contenders and All-WNBA stars, veteran guard Sami Whitcomb has quietly become one of the key pieces off the bench, and she's now made history doing it.

In a recent win over the Las Vegas Aces, Whitcomb lit it up again, scoring 14 points on 5-of-12 shooting, including 4-of-9 from deep. She also added three assists in her 28 minutes. But the real headline? That was her fifth straight game with 4 or more made three-pointers tying a WNBA record.

Whitcomb now shares the record for most consecutive games with 4+ threes in WNBA history, joining elite shooters like Caitlin Clark, Diana Taurasi, and Epiphanny Prince. It’s a big deal for the 2-time WNBA champion, who’s spent years refining her role as a sharpshooter and leader.

Clark, the Indiana Fever rookie phenom, previously set the mark earlier this season during her explosive debut campaign. The No. 1 overall pick has been lighting up the league with deep threes, court vision, and pace, all while drawing massive fan attention wherever she plays.

But Whitcomb’s journey is the opposite of overnight stardom. From going undrafted to playing overseas and working as a video coordinator, to finally earning her WNBA rookie season in 2017 her story is all about persistence. “There’s not a blueprint,” Whitcomb said. “It’s just work hard, stay ready, and when that opportunity comes, you seize it.”

Up next, Whitcomb and the Mercury look to keep the momentum going as they gear up for a big matchup this week. With the team firing on all cylinders, and Sami’s hot hand from deep, Phoenix is a real threat this season.
