3 WNBA Teams Have Near 100% Chance of Making the Playoffs
Dale Zanine-Imagn Images

With less than 18 games remaining in the WNBA season, the playoff picture is slowly taking shape. The battle for the postseason spots remain intense — particularly between the seventh to 10th seeds which are separated by just two games or less — but at least three teams have put themselves in a very good position to qualify.

The Minnesota Lynx, New York Liberty and Atlanta Dream currently lead the WNBA record-wise, and naturally, they have the best chances to clinch a playoff berth.

WNBA Playoffs Probability: Lynx, Liberty and Dream Lead

According to ESPN's WNBA Basketball Power Index (BPI), the Lynx, Liberty and Dream all have a 99.9% chance to make the playoffs.

The Lynx have the best record in the WNBA with a 24-5 record, five and a half games ahead of the second-seeded Liberty that boast an 18-10 record. The Dream, for their part, stand at 18-11.

While a losing skid could see the three teams fall from the top, the ESPN projections also don't see that happening. Minnesota is predicted to finish with at least 34 wins, while New York and Atlanta are expected to end up with 29 and 27 wins, respectively.

It is worth noting, however, that the Lynx will be without superstar Napheesa Collier for at least two weeks due to an ankle sprain. The Dream have also missed the services of Brittney Griner over their last two games due to a neck issue.

Here are the rest of the playoff probability for the remaining WNBA teams:

  • Phoenix Mercury: 99.3%
  • Indiana Fever: 99.2
  • Las Vegas Aces: 96.8%
  • Seattle Storm: 96.5%
  • Golden State Valkyries: 52.8%
  • Los Angeles Sparks: 33.4%
  • Washington Mystics: 21.6%
  • Dallas Wings: 0.5%
  • Connecticut Sun: 0.1%
  • Chicago Sky: 0.1%

Which WNBA Team Will Make the Finals?

Naturally, the two teams projected to make the WNBA Finals are the current record leaders.

The same ESPN BPI gives the Lynx a 70.3% chance to make the Finals and a 48.8% probability to win the championship. Minnesota made the title game last season but lost to the Liberty.

Minnesota last won the championship in 2017.

The Liberty, meanwhile, have a 57% chance to reach the championship game and a 30.9% to win it all once again.

It remains to be seen how both the Lynx and Liberty will fare for the rest of the season, but sure enough, they are the two teams to keep an eye on as the postseason approaches.
