Las Vegas Aces center Megan Gustafson has been out recovering from a lower leg injury, and head coach Becky Hammon has some encouraging words on her recovery.
The Aces have the best player in the league in A'ja Wilson, but having more help in the paint is going to be necessary if they want another postseason run.
Gustafson sustained a lower leg injury injury after landing on a teammate's foot during practice.
According to Callie Fin of the Las Vegas Review Journal, Hammon says Gustafson is "ahead of schedule."
"Really, it’s kind of up in the air, but the goal is to come back this season," Gustafson told Fin a few weeks ago. "We’re just gonna keep rehabbing as much as possible and try to get back as soon as possible. It’s tough, because I felt like I was playing some of my best, best basketball."
Gustafson averaged 3.7 points and 1.9 rebounds in 10.7 minutes per game for the Aces last season, playing in 38 games and starting seven. Now in her seventh WNBA season, the 28-year-old big says she's going to do everything she can to help the team while she's recovering, from rehabbing properly to mentoring the squad's younger players.
I asked Becky Hammon about Megan Gustafson’s return timeline before the Aces’ Tuesday win over Connecticut. She declined to give specifics but said she’s “ahead of schedule.”

As far as CPT — she’s having a baby. All anyone can do is estimate based on her late June due date https://t.co/X2q1X8M9S7
"I’ve been working on parts of my game that people really haven’t been able to see: Driving, specifically, being aggressive, getting to the rim, ball handling," she added. "And so I was really excited, feeling really good, but this is just a pause, and I’ll be back soon. Well, we’ll see. I don’t really know, to be honest. But yeah, as soon as I can."
Gustafson is also becoming more well-known overseas. After becoming naturalized as a Spanish citizen, she joined Spain's women's basketball squad for the 2024 Olympics in Paris. Over four games, she averaged 18.0 points and 9.3 rebounds, leading the team in both stats.
Las Vegas is also currently without forward Cheyenne Parker-Tyus, who is pregnant. Her return is understandably up in the air.
Next up, the Aces host the Mystics at Michelob ULTRA Arena on May 23.
