Aces Coach Becky Hammon Makes Caitlin Clark Admission After Fever Game

Becky Hammon and the Las Vegas Aces had struggled to begin the 2025 WNBA season, entering Sunday on a three-game losing streak.

However, that streak was snapped as the Aces defeated Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever 89-81 to cap off the weekend.

Clark got off to a fast start, at least with her playmaking, recording six assists in the first quarter alone and 10 throughout. However, the former Iowa Hawkeyes star struggled with her shot, scoring 19 points on 7-of-20 shooting and 1-of-10 from 3-point range. She also tallied eight turnovers.

Within the first four minutes, Clark had already tallied four assists, prompting the Aces to call a timeout. Turns out, Hammon had seen enough from her defense and decided to adjust her game plan for Clark.

After the win, Hammon joined the media for a postgame press conference, where she discussed her initial game plan for the 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year.

"We talked about Caitlin, pockets are her money," Hammon said. "You give her any kind of space in that pick-and-roll, that ball is gone, and they're getting layups. I thought they got that in the first half, and then we were able to switch up our defense to, I guess something more doable, and something that we could execute better than the original scheme."

Hammon later admitted she had to quickly “abort” the original game plan, adding that the Aces “never actually did” it.

"I think I called a timeout with about six something left in the first," she added. "So yeah, I aborted it about four minutes later."

With the win, Hammon and the Aces jumped to 6-7 on the season, good for fifth place in the Western Conference. Clark and the Fever, on the other hand, fell to 6-7 with the loss, but sit in third place in the Eastern Conference.
