The two-time defending champion Las Vegas Aces have lost three games in a row for the first time in nearly five years.
Despite having a loaded roster headed by two-time reigning Defensive Player of the Year and two-time MVP A'ja Wilson, the Aces are 5-5 following their 100-86 loss to the Minnesota Lynx on Tuesday.
It's the first time Las Vegas has dropped three in a row since Aug. 23-27, 2019 (a 143-game span), which was Wilson's second season and when Bill Laimbeer was still the head coach. Per the Elias Sports Bureau, the only time a team had a longer stretch between three-game skids was when the Houston Comets went six years (224 contests) from the WNBA's inaugural 1997 season to 2003.
Wilson said she isn't worried about the team's slow start.
"This is a long, long, long season," she said, according to ESPN's Michael Voepel. "I'm not going to press the panic button. I'm still going to bet on us. I know exactly what's in that locker room."
The Aces started the season 4-1 but have lost four of their last five.
Wilson has been putting up MVP numbers, leading The Association in points per game (28.3) and a host of other categories, while tying for the top spot in rebounds per contest (11.4) and win shares (2.9). Las Vegas has been without five-time All-Star guard Chelsea Gray all season, however, due to a left foot injury she suffered in Game 3 of the 2023 WNBA Finals.
Things won't get much easier for the Aces this week, as they travel to face Brittney Griner and the Phoenix Mercury on Thursday and then host Breanna Stewart and the New York Liberty in a finals rematch on Saturday.
